Tata Motors Expected To Launch India’s First Flex Fuel Car By End Of 2026

Tata Motors is expected to launch its first flex-fuel vehicle in India by the end of 2026, marking another major step in the company's expanding alternative fuel portfolio. Flex-fuel vehicles are designed to run on higher ethanol blends and are being viewed as a practical alternative to conventional petrol and diesel-powered cars.

With global crude oil prices remaining volatile and geopolitical tensions in West Asia continuing to impact energy markets, automakers are increasingly exploring alternative fuels.

Flex Fuel Vehicle From Tata Motors

Tata Motors, one of India's leading car manufacturers, is preparing to introduce this flex fuel technology as part of its broader strategy to diversify beyond petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric vehicles.

At the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, Tata Motors showcased the Tata Punch Flex Fuel, capable of operating on ethanol blends ranging from E20 to E100. If launched, flex fuel would become the company's fifth major powertrain option after petrol, diesel, CNG, and EVs.

The Tata Punch is expected to be the first model in the lineup to receive this technology, making it one of the most versatile offerings in the segment with petrol, CNG, EV, and flex-fuel variants. The Tata Punch is already one of India's best-selling vehicles, making it the perfect choice for Tata Motors to debut its flex-fuel technology.

The vehicle is likely to use the familiar 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine modified to run on higher ethanol blends such as E85, which consists of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent petrol. Several other manufacturers, including Hyundai Motor Company, Maruti Suzuki, and Toyota Motor Corporation, are also developing flex-fuel vehicles for the Indian market.

Higher ethanol blending can significantly reduce India's dependence on imported crude oil, strengthen energy security, and support domestic agriculture by creating greater demand for crops used in ethanol production. Since ethanol is produced within India, wider adoption of flex-fuel vehicles could also benefit farmers and contribute to the growth of the local economy.
