Supreme Court Bans Highway Parking For Trucks – Strict Action, Heavy Fines Ahead

Supreme Court of India has now banned highway parking for commercial and heavy vehicles. This order was given due to continuous incidents and fatalities recorded due to vehicle parked on the highways.

Indian road infrastructure is growing steadily but despite that it records the highest number of road accidents in the world. The government has taken several measures to reduce road accidents and fatalities but it keeps increasing.

One of the key factors lead to accidents is parking of heavy vehicles on the highways. Commercial trucks and tankers which carry goods often park their vehicles on the side of the highways. The government has built separate parking lots for these types of vehicles on the expressways.

However, drivers fail to follow these parking corridors and park their vehicles on the highways. A recent incident of three young men died after crashing on a truck parked on the highways was recorded in a video and went viral.

Illegal parking on the highways has contributed to many major accidents. Especially during night times where the visibility is very low and many drivers fail to notice the parked vehicles.

Now, the Supreme court has stepped in and stated that no heavy of commercial vehicle will be allowed to stop or park on national highways or even service roads. This will be monitored through advanced traffic management systems (ATMs) and GPS based evidences.

Strict Actions To be taken

Heavy chalans will be given to those who illegally park their vehicle on the highways. Strict actions will be taken on those who violate these rules. Ministry of Road Transport and Highways, the National Highways Authority of India, State police and transport departments will be given responsibility to ensure no commercial or heavy vehicle is parked on the highways.

A 60 day deadline has been set by the supreme court and within this period all the authorities must enforce this parking ban by setting systems for monitoring these violators. Along with these, the government also banned construction on new commercial structures or food outlets to make sure there is no unwanted parking for the truck drivers.

Existing structures will need to follow strict norms and their licence will be revived within 30 days. There were also many incidents recorded due to these commercial structures where travellers often stop. A ground level; highway task force will also be created within 15 days to identify accident prone areas, and take necessary action.
