Skoda Kushaq Facelift New 8-Speed Automatic: What It Means For Performance & Mileage
Skoda India has introduced the AQ300 8-speed torque converter automatic transmission in the Indian market with the launch of the Skoda Kushaq Facelift, replacing the earlier AQ250 6-speed torque converter unit. This new transmission is expected to change the driving dynamics of the 1.0-litre TSI engine. Here's a look at what makes this gearbox special, with its key highlights.
Skoda AQ300 8-Speed Automatic Key Highlights
Lower Cost
This new 8-speed transmission is more cost-efficient than the previous 6-speed torque converter automatic. Despite being an advanced gearbox, it aligns well with Skoda's supply chain strategy at a more affordable cost. Due to its cost-effectiveness, it could be used across multiple models in the Skoda-VW lineup, including the Slavia, Kylaq, Taigun, and Virtus.

Lower Maintenance
With additional gear ratios, the engine operates at lower stress levels, resulting in smoother performance, gearshifts, and potentially lower CO₂ emissions. The internal components are subjected to less strain, which is expected to improve long-term reliability. This transmission is over-engineered for the 1.0L TSI engine. So, the Maintenance requirements for this gearbox are also lower, which is why Skoda has opted for this unit over the earlier 6-speed automatic.
Improved Efficiency
The increased number of gears helps improve overall efficiency. This transmission is well-tuned specifically for Indian driving conditions and is expected to deliver higher fuel efficiency in both city and highway driving. It is also claimed to operate more quietly at higher speeds compared to the outgoing 6-speed torque converter.

First in Segment
This 8-speed torque converter automatic is claimed to be the first-in-segment offering for an engine of this class. It is expected to perform better in urban driving conditions than the 7-speed DSG paired with the 1.5-litre TSI engine, while also delivering smoother acceleration and a more natural driving feel than the CVT-equipped rival SUVs.
Skoda is offering two powertrains for the Skoda Kushaq Facelift: 1.0L TSI (115 PS/ 178 Nm) with a 6-speed manual and an 8-speed Torque converter Automatic, and the powerful 1.5L TSI (150 PS/ 250 Nm) with a 7-speed DSG gearbox. Now with the introduction of the AQ300 8-speed Automatic, Skoda has set a new benchmark in the segment.
