This powertrain from Renault has been developed in partnership with Mercedes-Benz. The 1.3L TCe TGDi 4-cylinder petrol engine produces a class-leading 160 hp and 280 Nm of torque, making it one of the most powerful engines in the compact SUV segment.
The transmission options include a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed DCT (wet clutch), which is well-suited to Indian driving conditions, offering smooth and efficient gear shifts even in demanding environments.
Introduction Year
This powertrain is jointly developed by Renault, Nissan, Mitsubishi, and Mercedes-Benz. It was first introduced in 2018, with each brand tuning the engine differently to suit their respective models. Mercedes-Benz refers to this engine as the M282 and uses it in select models within its lineup.
Engine Specialities
The engine features Variable Valve Timing (VVT) for intake and exhaust, thereby enhancing performance and fuel efficiency. It uses high-pressure direct injection technology with injectors operating at up to 250 bar and delivering two injections per power stroke.
This setup ensures better combustion, resulting in improved power delivery and efficiency. Additionally, the engine uses spray-coated cylinder walls to reduce friction, improving durability and overall performance.
Mild Hybrid
The powertrain also features a 12V mild-hybrid system designed to improve efficiency without adding significant weight or cost. It includes a starter generator and a compact 12V lithium-ion battery. The system recovers energy during deceleration and braking, storing it for later use.
This stored energy assists the engine during acceleration, improving torque delivery while also enhancing fuel efficiency. It results in smoother performance, better efficiency, and reduced CO2 emissions.
Availability and Pricing
One of the key advantages for customers is that this mild-hybrid powertrain is available from the second trim level, known as Evolution. It is priced at ₹12.69 lakh (ex-showroom) for the manual variant and ₹13.99 lakh (ex-showroom) for the DCT automatic. For buyers looking for a powerful yet efficient hybrid setup at a relatively accessible price point, the 1.3L TCe Turbo petrol engine stands out as a strong option.
