Nitin Gadkari Sets 5-Year Target To Make India’s Auto Industry World’s No. 1

Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari recently outlined a bold vision to make India's automobile industry the largest in the world within the next five years.

Speaking at the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations' (FADA) 7th Auto Retail Conclave, Gadkari emphasised that the sector's growth trajectory, cost competitiveness and adoption of new technologies could propel India ahead of the United States and China to become the No. 1 global auto industry by 2030.

Gadkari noted the industry's rapid expansion during his tenure, highlighting that when he assumed office, the sector was valued at around ₹14 lakh crore and ranked seventh globally. India has since overtaken Japan and become the third-largest automobile market, with an industry size of approximately ₹32 lakh crore. The United States remains the largest market at roughly ₹78 lakh crore, followed by China at around ₹49 lakh crore.

The minister stressed that India's competitive manufacturing costs and good vehicle quality position it favourably for global leadership. "By developing alternative fuels, biofuels, battery chemistries, new technology, and innovation, I am confident that within five years our target is to make India number one in the world. It is difficult, but not impossible," he said.

Gadkari outlined several structural strengths that support this ambition. He pointed to India's large and skilled workforce, cost-effective production ecosystem, and the presence of major global automakers with local manufacturing and export operations. These factors, he said, provide a foundation for scaling production and enhancing India's role as a global manufacturing hub with a strong export focus.

Clean mobility technologies were central to his remarks. Gadkari emphasised that future growth would be anchored not just in conventional automotive manufacturing but also in electric vehicles, hydrogen, ethanol and other low-carbon fuel technologies. He acknowledged that the transition to greener vehicles would be gradual, noting that established internal combustion demand would continue alongside emerging technologies as part of a broader industry shift.

The minister also pointed to India's success in exports, especially in the two-wheeler segment, where production for international markets has expanded significantly. He highlighted that India now hosts production and export operations for numerous global brands, suggesting that export-oriented manufacturing will be a key driver of future growth.

While the target of becoming the world's No. 1 automobile industry within five years is ambitious, Gadkari's vision reflects the government's strategic focus on industrial growth, export capacity expansion, and technology adoption as it aims to enhance global competitiveness. However, if this vision can actually be executed is something only time will tell.
