Nissan Terrano PHEV & Urban SUV Concepts Debut At Beijing 2026 - Production Due Within A Year
Japanese carmaker Nissan pulled the wraps off two electrified SUV concepts at Auto China 2026 in Beijing - the Terrano PHEV Concept and the Urban SUV Concept as it continues on its recovery path. Both concepts are confirmed for production within a year, alongside three additional new energy vehicle (NEV) models planned for China in the same timeframe.
Nissan Terrano PHEV: Body-on-Frame Off-Roader
The Terrano nameplate, last used in India on a Duster-based midsize SUV from 2013 to 2020, returns as a full-sized boxy off-roader. It rides on what appears to be a body-on-frame ladder-frame chassis, a significant departure from its predecessor.

The Terrano PHEV concept's exterior follows a "Modern Robust" design language: a vertical front end, short overhangs for approach angle, rectangular LED headlamps, illuminated Nissan lettering, skid plates, orange recovery hooks, a roof rack with auxiliary projectors, rock sliders, and a rear-gate-mounted spare wheel.
Nissan hasn't confirmed powertrain figures, but the Terrano is expected to share its PHEV setup with the Frontier Pro PHEV built with Dongfeng. That system uses a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor, producing a combined 429hp and 800Nm. The 33kWh battery delivers up to 135km of pure-EV range under CLTC testing.

Production will start in China within a year, and select global markets will also receive the Terrano. North America and Europe are unlikely targets; the Terrano PHEV is expected to slot between the Patrol and X-Trail in markets like Latin America, ASEAN, and the Middle East.
Nissan Urban SUV: City-Centric Crossover

The Urban SUV takes the opposite approach to the Terrano PHEV. Finished in a mauve shade, it targets younger Chinese buyers with a sleek, road-focused crossover silhouette. Nissan hasn't detailed the Urban SUV's powertrain, nor confirmed export plans beyond China. A production reveal is expected within 12 months.
Design cues draw from the recently launched Nissan NX8, with split LED headlamps, L-shaped DRL signatures, an illuminated Nissan emblem, flush camera-based mirrors, a raked roofline, and connected tail-lamp clusters. Visible door handles are absent, giving the flanks a clean, unbroken surface.

Ivan Espinosa, President and CEO, said "Under our vision, China is not only a highly competitive domestic market but also a source of innovation, enabling us to create new value and experiences for customers in China and in the global markets. Advanced technology must serve a clear purpose and be experienced directly by customers through mobility that is safer, more intuitive, and more accessible. China is central to bringing this belief to life."
