Nissan-Honda Tie-Up In India? – CEO Hints At New Partnership
Japanese car manufacturer Nissan has called for a potential partnership with Honda in India. The company is looking to expand beyond its existing alliance with Renault to rebuild its market share and strategy.
Nissan-Honda Partnership In India
Nissan India has been struggling to gain traction in the domestic market for several years. The company currently operates in partnership with Renault India, manufacturing vehicles in Chennai while also exporting them to international markets.

A decade ago, Nissan had a diverse product portfolio in India. However, it has now narrowed down to just three models-the Nissan Magnite, Nissan X-Trail, and Nissan Gravite. The brand is also preparing to introduce the new Tekton mid-size SUV, based on the Renault Duster, by mid-2026.
Rebuilding Strategy In India
The company is now exploring partnerships beyond Renault in India. Nissan CEO Ivan Espinosa, speaking to Autocar, said, "We have a good partnership with Renault in India, but the beauty is we can explore other options too. So like you, I too am wondering what we could possibly do with Honda in India."

Last year, there were speculations about a tie-up with Honda. However, the discussions did not materialise, reportedly because Honda wanted Nissan to operate as a sub-brand rather than an equal partner.
Nissan is currently in a revival phase. They targeting sales of 200,000 units across domestic and export markets. There is also potential for Nissan to expand into the electric vehicle segment, possibly in collaboration with Renault. If Honda joins the partnership, it could help build a broader ecosystem covering ICE, hybrid, and EV vehicles.
Like Nissan, Honda is also facing challenges in maintaining its market share in India, as new players have entered the market and intensified competition. The company is also working on its revival strategy. Honda has begun testing its Honda O Alpha electric SUV in India, which is expected to launch around 2027.
