New Gen Kia Sonet Spied In India: New Platform, More Space And Hybrid Power On The Cards

Kia's upcoming next-generation Kia Sonet has been spotted testing in India and is expected to launch in 2027. The new model is likely to receive a fresh design, updated styling, a revised interior, and an all-new platform.

The South Korean carmaker is currently one of the leading manufacturers in India, with models like the Kia Seltos and Kia Carens being among its most popular offerings. In the sub-4-metre SUV segment, Kia sells the Kia Sonet, which is known for offering segment-leading features and multiple petrol and diesel engine options.

Now, Kia is preparing the next-generation Sonet on the new K1 platform, which is also shared with the Kia Syros. This new platform is capable of supporting multiple powertrain options, including electric and hybrid.

One of the biggest advantages of this platform is its longer wheelbase, which could improve cabin space significantly. Rear seat space has been one of the weaker areas in the current Sonet, and this new generation is expected to solve that issue by offering better legroom and comfort for passengers.

On the design front, the new Sonet could feature a redesigned grille inspired by the Kia Seltos, along with new projector LED headlamps, a more muscular silhouette, and a more commanding driving position that could enhance its SUV appeal.

Inside, the cabin could receive a larger touchscreen infotainment system similar to the Kia Syros or the updated Kia Seltos. Kia may also introduce Level 2 ADAS in the new gen Sonet to improve overall safety. The brand could aim for a 5-star Bharat NCAP rating, similar to its newer products.

Multiple Powertrains

Mechanically, the current powertrains are expected to continue, including the 1.2-litre naturally aspirated petrol, 1.0-litre turbo-petrol, and 1.5-litre diesel engine options, along with manual and automatic transmissions.

Since the new platform also supports electric and hybrid powertrains, future variants remain a strong possibility. While the next-gen Sonet is expected to launch in early 2027, the EV and hybrid versions could arrive around 2028.
