New Renault Duster SUV Brings Real Engineering Back To India

The Renault Duster has been relaunched in India with refreshed exterior and interior features. However, beyond the updates, this compact SUV continues to offer world-class engineering and hardware that very few rivals in the segment can match. Let's take a closer look at the top engineering highlights of the new-generation Renault Duster.

Renault Duster- Engineering Facts

CMF-B Architecture

The third-generation Renault Duster is based on the global Dacia Duster and retains several core design and engineering elements. However, for Indian road conditions, the SUV has been specifically tuned. The new CMF-B platform offers improved safety and higher structural rigidity compared to the previous-generation Duster sold in India.

Globally, the CMF-B platform has performed well in crash tests. Despite being lighter, the chassis is significantly stronger, resulting in better handling and reduced NVH levels. Renault claims the platform is capable of achieving a 5-star safety rating, marking a massive improvement over the older model.

1.8L Strong Hybrid - The Real Game Changer

This is arguably the biggest highlight of the new Renault Duster. Renault claims this is one of the most efficient strong hybrid systems in the segment. The 4-cylinder petrol engine produces 109 hp and 172 Nm on its own.

When combined with the electric motor, which adds 50 hp and 205 Nm, the system delivers a combined output of around 160 hp, making it the most powerful hybrid setup in the segment.

The 1.4 kWh lithium-ion battery is larger than those used by Toyota and Maruti Suzuki hybrids. This allows the Duster to operate in EV mode for up to 80% of city driving, while also delivering a claimed driving range of up to 1,000 km per tank.

1.3L TCe 160 - The Mercedes Co-Developed Powerhouse

Another standout is the 1.3L TCe mild-hybrid petrol engine, co-developed by the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance along with Mercedes-Benz. This engine is also used in models like the Mercedes-Benz A-Class and GLA 200. The 4-cylinder, 16-valve turbocharged unit produces 163 PS of power and 280 Nm of torque.

It is offered with a 6-speed manual and a DCT automatic transmission featuring a wet clutch, which is better suited for Indian driving conditions where clutches are exposed to higher heat and stress. This engine is notably more powerful than the Hyundai Creta's 1.5L turbo-petrol, giving the Duster a clear performance edge.

Level 2 ADAS - Renault's "Human First" Programme

The new Renault Duster is equipped with a Level 2 ADAS safety suite offering 17 advanced driver assistance features. Key highlights include an Adaptive Cruise Control, Active Emergency Braking, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, and a 360-degree 3D camera system. This aligns with Renault's global "Human First" safety philosophy, focusing on real-world accident prevention.

8-Speed E-Clutch System - F1-Derived Technology

Renault's motorsport heritage plays a key role here. The E-Clutch system is a clutchless 8-speed automatic transmission. This uses a Formula 1-inspired dog-clutch system for direct engagement.

At lower speeds, the transmission gives efficiency using fewer ratios, while at higher speeds, it unlocks performance-focused gears for stronger acceleration and higher top speeds. By blending fuel efficiency with performance, Renault has created a technically superior and segment-leading drivetrain.

Our Thoughts

While many compact SUVs in India nowadays focus heavily on features and styling, the Renault Duster stands out by offering genuine engineering along with features that are needed for Indian road conditions. From its CMF-B platform and strong hybrid system to its Mercedes-derived engine and F1-inspired transmission, the Duster remains one of the most technically advanced SUVs in its class.
