MG’s First Plug-In Hybrid SUV For India Teased; Could Rival XUV700 And Safari
JSW MG Motor India is gearing up to launch its first-ever plug-in hybrid electric vehicle (PHEV) in India. This upcoming mid-size SUV is likely to be based on the Wuling Starlight S, as MG already sells Wuling's compact EV in India as the MG Comet EV.
MG Motor India has released a new teaser showcasing an upcoming SUV. The teaser carries the message: "Internet Inside transformed the way India drove. Now, it's time to power the next evolution. Join us as we redefine the way India thinks about New Energy Vehicles."
MG's First Plug-In Hybrid For India
This upcoming New Energy Vehicle is expected to be either a fully electric or a plug-in hybrid SUV. However, considering MG has been testing this model on Indian roads for several months, it is more likely to be the brand's first PHEV offering in the country. The upcoming SUV is also expected to be a three-row model aimed at family buyers and premium SUV customers.
Based On Wuling Starlight Platform

The Wuling Starlight S is available globally in both EV and PHEV versions. The EV variant gets a 56.7 kWh battery pack paired with a front-wheel-drive motor, offering a claimed range of up to 500 km.
The PHEV version uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with an electric motor, producing 197 hp and 230 Nm of torque. The battery alone offers up to 100 km of pure electric range, while the combined hybrid setup significantly extends the total driving range.
Features And Segment Positioning

Feature-wise, this new SUV could borrow several technologies from the MG Windsor EV and MG Comet EV, including connected car technology, advanced infotainment, and smart convenience features.
Other expected features include automatic climate control, premium comfort features, and a technology-rich cabin. The vehicle is likely to be imported from China in CKD form and locally assembled at MG's manufacturing facility in India.
MG is expected to launch this new SUV during the festive season. Once launched, it could rival models like the Mahindra XUV700, Tata Safari, and Toyota Innova Hycross. This could be the beginning of MG's larger New Energy Vehicle strategy in India, with more electrified models expected in the future.
