Maruti Suzuki Ignis Quietly Discontinued - Dealer Stocks Near Exhaustion As Production Stops

Maruti Suzuki has silently wound down production of the Ignis hatchback, according to multiple reports. To confirm this, we got in touch with a Nexa dealer who confirmed that production of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis had been wound down sometime in January.

Nearly nine years after it first went on sale, most dealerships have stopped accepting new bookings, with only a handful of outlets across the country still holding limited stock of the hatchback. However, the Ignis is still listed on the Nexa website, and Maruti Suzuki has not issued any official statement on the matter.

The Ignis was launched in January 2017 through Maruti Suzuki's premium Nexa retail channel and was priced between Rs 5.35 lakh and Rs 7.55 lakh (ex-showroom), making it the most affordable model in the Nexa lineup. At launch, it was offered with an 83hp, 1.2-litre K-series petrol and a 75hp, 1.3-litre DDiS diesel, though the diesel was dropped in 2018 due to weak demand.

Despite its crossover-inspired styling, the Maruti Suzuki Ignis never found a large audience in India. Sales peaked in 2022 at 51,176 units - impressive by its own standards, but far below the similarly priced Swift, which moved 1,76,424 units the same year.

In recent months, monthly sales of the Maruti Suzuki Ignis had fallen below the 2,000-unit mark. Part of the problem was the quirky design that didn't resonate widely, and part of it was Maruti's own lack of investment in the model. In nine years on sale, the Ignis received just one major update, a mid-lifecycle facelift in 2020, apart from a minor safety revision in 2019.

Safety upgrades also passed the Ignis by. It remained one of only two Maruti models still sold with just two airbags as standard, the other being the S-Presso, even as Maruti rolled out six airbags as standard across the rest of its lineup through 2025. The Ignis was also among the very few Maruti products never offered with a factory-fitted CNG kit, further limiting its appeal in an increasingly value-conscious market.

The Ignis' journey closely mirrors that of the Ciaz, which also saw minimal updates before being quietly phased out. A revival of the Ignis nameplate is considered unlikely, though its spiritual successor is expected to arrive in the form of Maruti Suzuki's upcoming Y43 sub-compact SUV, which is expected to rival the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch.
