New Mahindra Thar OG – What's New Compared To The Old Thar

Mahindra has launched the new Thar OG in India at a price range of Rs 10.32 lakh to Rs 18.99 lakh (ex-showroom). The SUV rides on a new platform and picks up a revised suspension, updated engines and a reworked cabin over the outgoing model.

This is likely the most complete update the ICE-only Thar will see before Mahindra introduces hybrid or fully electric versions. Alongside the mechanical changes, Thar OG now spans a wider range of variants and powertrain combinations than before.

Mahindra Thar OG Price and Variants

The base AXT variant is offered only with the 1.5-litre diesel engine in 2WD form. LXT trim spans seven variants priced between Rs 12.99 lakh and Rs 17.99 lakh, while the range-topping ZXT trim is priced from Rs 13.99 lakh to Rs 18.99 lakh.

Mahindra Thar OG: Engine and Performance

Three engine options continue on the new Thar OG: a 1.5-litre diesel, a 2.0-litre turbo petrol and a 2.2-litre turbo diesel. Output on the 1.5-litre diesel carries over unchanged, while the two larger engines have both been tuned for more power.

The 2.0-litre turbo petrol now makes 162 PS and 330 Nm, up from 150 PS and 300 Nm (MT) or 320 Nm (AT) on the outgoing Thar. The 2.2-litre diesel gets a bigger jump, rising from 132 PS to 152 PS, with torque up 30 Nm to 330 Nm.

Transmission choices for these two engines remain a 6-speed manual and a 6-speed automatic, but only on 4WD variants. RWD versions of the 2.0-litre petrol and 2.2-litre diesel are offered exclusively with the automatic gearbox.

Mahindra Thar OG: Platform and Off-Road Upgrades

The Mahindra Thar OG is built on the M_Glyde 4G ladder-frame platform, a shortened version of the chassis underpinning the five-door Thar Roxx. It brings higher structural stiffness and greater torsional rigidity than before. A new rear PENTALINK suspension with a Watts link replaces the previous setup, aimed at sharper on-road handling as well as stronger off-road articulation and traction.

Mahindra has also added its DAVINCI frequency-dependent damping (FDD) tech, which cuts body roll and improves ride comfort without giving up off-road ability. An electronic locking differential now replaces the earlier mechanical unit, available only on 4WD variants, which also get Mud, Sand and Snow terrain modes.

Mahindra Thar OG: Exterior and Interior Updates

Up front, Thar OG gets a new five-slot grille with a THAR-badged side insert, along with redesigned front and rear bumpers and a wider track. Higher variants add 19-inch alloy wheels and LED fog lamps with a cornering function.

Cabin updates include a leatherette-wrapped steering wheel, embossed leatherette seats and a soft armrest with a cupholder for second-row occupants. The new Thar OG also gains a push-button start system, a Type-C port for rear passengers, wireless charging up front and electric power steering. The safety kit now includes 6 airbags and disc brakes on all four wheels.
