Kia Carens CNG, Carens Clavis CNG: Engine & Other Specifications

The CNG variants of the Carens and Carens Clavis both use the same 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engine that produces 96hp and 123Nm, a drop of 19hp and 21Nm over when the powerplant is running on petrol. Power for the CNG variants goes through a 6-speed manual gearbox, while the petrol-only Carens and Carens Clavis are also offered with iMT and DCT options. Kia has not yet revealed a certified fuel-efficiency figure for the CNG variants, though it is expected to fall between 22km per kg and 25km per kg.

The factory-fitted 60-litre CNG tank sits beneath the boot floor and is integrated alongside the existing petrol fuel system, giving both MPVs a dual-fuel setup. Boot space drops from 216 litres to 116 litres as a result, though the underbody-mounted spare wheel is retained.

Kia says it has retuned the suspension and fitted 16-inch front disc brakes to compensate for the added weight, and the engine has been recalibrated for CNG operation to minimise the impact on performance.

Both CNG variants also get a dedicated fuel-change switch and a 4.2-inch colour TFT instrument display with a CNG distance-to-empty readout. Kia has additionally modified the third-row seatback frame on both MPVs to improve its recline angle.

Commenting on the announcement, Atul Sood, Senior Vice President - Marketing & Sales, Kia India, said, "India is a diverse market where customers have distinct mobility requirements, and our approach is to offer them the powertrain that best complements their lifestyle and usage. CNG continues to be an important consideration for a growing set of customers seeking an efficient and practical mobility solution. By introducing factory-fitted CNG options on the Carens and Carens Clavis, we are responding to this demand with an integrated offering backed by Kia. Both models have established a strong proposition around space, comfort and family-focused practicality, and the addition of CNG further broadens their appeal while giving customers greater freedom to choose."
