India Plans Internet-Free V2V Communication System To Reduce Road Accidents By 2026

India is among the top countries with the highest rate of road accidents. Every year, thousands of people lose their lives due to road accidents. Now, the Government of India plans to launch an internet-free V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle) communication and alert system to avoid road accidents. The plan is expected to roll out by the end of 2026.

V2V Communication System For Road Accidents

According to an Economic Times report, Union Minister of Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, stated that the V2V communication system aims to reduce road accidents, especially those occurring due to blind spots, rear-end collisions, fog-related crashes, and accidents involving stationary vehicles.

Road Accidents

This Vehicle-to-Vehicle communication system can work independently without any internet or mobile network connectivity. As a result, it can be integrated with almost all vehicles, enabling real-time alerts to drivers when another vehicle is nearby, helping to prevent collisions and accidents. The minister claimed that this system could potentially eliminate around 80% of road accidents.

Vehicle manufacturers are currently being consulted, and once the standards are finalised, an official announcement will be made by the government. The system is expected to cost between 5,000 and 7,000 per vehicle. Initially, this V2V technology will be made mandatory for newer vehicles, and later it will be expanded to existing vehicles.

Road Accidents

The Indian government has already notified the telecom ministry to allocate 30 MHz of spectrum for V2V communication free of cost under the National Frequency Allocation framework. The total cost of this project is estimated to be around 5,000 crore. Considering the number of road accidents reported every day in India, this initiative by the Union government is necessary.

Gadkari also addressed recent fatal bus accidents across India that have claimed hundreds of lives. He stated that sleeper coach buses will now be manufactured only by automobile companies with centralised accreditation. Existing buses will be retrofitted with fire detection systems, emergency exits, emergency lighting, and driver drowsiness indicators. The Ministry has also identified 100 districts in India with the highest number of road accidents, which will be the primary focus for implementing these regulations.
