Honda Taps Tata Technologies For New Car Platform
Honda has entrusted Tata Technologies with the development of an all-new vehicle platform according to a report by Nikkei Asia. This sees the Japanese marque departing from its usual approach of engineering platforms, chassis and powertrains in-house.
Tata Technologies operates independently of Tata Motors despite both companies belonging to the Tata Group. It functions as a global engineering and product development partner across automotive, aerospace and industrial clients, and this marks the first time Honda has worked with an Indian engineering firm on platform development.
The new architecture is expected to underpin multiple Honda models, including hybrids and other electrified vehicles, built for Asia and other global markets. However, the North American market will not use this particular platform. Honda has not confirmed programme specifics but said it continually evaluates collaboration opportunities with external companies to strengthen its future competitiveness.
The partnership arrives as Honda works to cut vehicle development costs and improve efficiency across its global operations. The automaker cancelled three electric vehicle programmes earlier this year that were planned for North America and Japan, part of a wider reassessment of its EV strategy. For the financial year ending March 2027, Honda expects a loss of around 520 billion yen, about $3.3 billion, largely tied to supplier compensation and other restructuring costs from those cancelled projects.
Honda's "Triple Half" strategy targets a 50 percent cut in vehicle development costs, engineering workload and development time compared to 2025 levels. Partnering with specialist engineering firms is expected to support these targets, a pattern automakers worldwide are increasingly adopting to shorten product cycles while controlling costs.
Honda has not disclosed a timeline for the new platform or named the first production models to use it. Since it is built to support multiple hybrid and electrified vehicles, the architecture could eventually underpin future models sold in India and other international markets.
The deal adds to Honda's expanding India plans, which include the upcoming 0 Alpha electric SUV, a new sub-4 metre SUV and an all-new midsize SUV over the next few years. Honda has reiterated plans to launch 10 new cars in India by 2030.
