Honda Begins Pan-India Testing Of 'O Alpha' Electric SUV – First EV For India

Honda Cars India has officially flagged off the test run of its upcoming electric SUV based on the brand's new O-series platform. This model will mark Honda's first official entry into the highly competitive electric vehicle (EV) segment in India.

Honda Battery Electric Vehicle Testing Started

The O Alpha SUV was first showcased as a prototype at the Japan Mobility Show in 2025, representing the company's future electric mobility plans. It was meant for multiple markets such as Japan, the USA and India. But the company has recently announced that it would scrap the O series EV platform for the US market due to policy changes and unfavourable market conditions.

However, the company confirmed that the O Alpha EV will still be developed for the Indian market and will be locally produced to keep costs competitive. Staying true to that commitment, Honda has now begun the pan-India test run of its Battery Electric Vehicle (BEV) SUV, marking a major milestone in the brand's electrification journey in India.

This upcoming electric SUV is being developed as a future-ready product specifically made for Indian customers. The Honda O Alpha Prototype was first showcased at the JMS 2025 alongside several other O-series EV concepts. The production version of the SUV will be manufactured at Honda's Tapukara facility in Rajasthan and will primarily be sold in the domestic market. In addition, the company also plans to export the model to several international markets, including Japan.

The ongoing testing programme represents the first step in Honda's broader EV strategy. The SUV will be evaluated across some of the most demanding and diverse road conditions in India. Known for their challenging terrain and unpredictable conditions, Indian roads provide the ideal environment to test the vehicle's durability, ride quality, handling, efficiency, and overall reliability.

The testing phase will also include evaluations under extreme heat and heavy monsoon conditions. In addition, Honda will assess the vehicle's charging performance across multiple types of charging infrastructure to ensure practicality and convenience for everyday users.

Speaking about the testing programme, Honda Cars India President and CEO Takashi Nakajima said, "The start of the pan-India Public Road Verification testing is a key milestone in our electrification journey. India has unique driving and climate conditions, and we need to test our electric vehicle thoroughly in real-world environments."

He added, "This programme reflects Honda's global engineering strengths combined with a strong focus on local customer needs, as we prepare to introduce an electric SUV that offers reliability, comfort, and ease of use."

The upcoming O Alpha EV SUV is expected to be designed for both city commuting and long-distance highway driving, with multiple battery packs and range options likely to be offered. The model is expected to make its global debut by late 2026. Once launched, it will compete with several key EV players in the Indian market, including Tata Motors, Mahindra, MG Motor, and VinFast.
