Honda Looking For New Partners In India: Big SUV & EV Plans Ahead

Honda has openly announced that it is looking for active partners in India. The Japanese automaker was already speculated to partner with Nissan to strengthen its operations and expand its presence in the Indian market.

Honda Looking for Partners in India

Japanese automaker Honda is currently exploring new partnership opportunities in India as part of its long-term growth strategy. The company has been facing challenges in the passenger vehicle segment over the last few years due to increasing competition and changing customer preferences. To improve its market position, Honda is now open to collaborating with other manufacturers and technology partners.

This proposed partnership could include technology transfer agreements, cross-badging opportunities, platform sharing, and powertrain sourcing and supply partnerships. Such collaborations could significantly reduce development and production costs while helping Honda expand its product portfolio more efficiently in India.

Honda currently operates manufacturing facilities in Greater Noida and Tapukara, Rajasthan. The company is also planning to expand its Rajasthan facility to support future EV production in the country. Honda has already begun testing its India-focused electric vehicle, internally known as the O Alpha, which is expected to play a major role in the brand's future EV plans.

This plant could also be used to manufacture vehicles for export to multiple international markets, including Japan. The Elevate, sold in Japan as the WR-V is already one of the best-selling cars in Japanese market.

At present, Honda has a relatively limited product lineup in India, which includes models like the Honda Amaze, Honda City, and Honda Elevate. Recently, the company also introduced the updated City facelift along with the ZR-V Hybrid in selected markets to strengthen its premium positioning.

Honda is now reworking its India strategy aggressively, with plans to introduce four new models by 2026. The company is also expected to develop more India-specific products before the end of this decade. Honda reportedly considers India among its three most important global markets, alongside North America and Japan.

The company's primary focus is likely to be on the highly competitive sub-4 metre and mid-size SUV segments, which currently generate the highest demand among Indian buyers. These segments continue to dominate the market due to their practicality, pricing, and growing customer preference for SUVs.

Strategic partnerships between automotive brands are already common in India. Stellantis recently announced a partnership with Tata Motors for SUV platforms. Similarly, Toyota and Maruti Suzuki continue to share platforms, technology, and powertrains across multiple models. Likewise, the alliance between Renault and Nissan is also expanding with new products expected in the coming years, including the return of the Duster SUV.
