Chinese Auto Giant Geely To Boost Renault And Nissan’s Hybrid Plans In India
Chinese carmaker Geely is expected to invest in Renault to manufacture hybrid powertrains in Chennai. This move will allow Renault's Chennai facility to locally produce hybrid engines in India.
Renault and Geely Holding Group are already partners in hybrid engine development through Horse Powertrain, a company that is fast becoming a key player in hybrid and combustion technology.
Geely's India Investment Could Power Renault And Nissan's Hybrid Future

French automaker Renault and Chinese manufacturer Geely have jointly invested in Horse Powertrain to develop advanced hybrid systems. Now, a new proposal has been submitted that could see Geely making a direct investment in India for hybrid powertrain manufacturing.
The Renault Group, which already manufactures vehicles and powertrains in Chennai, is expected to benefit from this new investment worth around $370 million. If approved, this could become one of the largest investments made by a Chinese company in India's hybrid automotive sector.

Horse Powertrain will manufacture hybrid engines for Renault and Nissan vehicles. Chinese brands such as BYD and SAIC Motor are already active in India, and this investment could further strengthen Chinese participation in the country's evolving hybrid ecosystem.
Hybrid vehicles are increasingly being seen as a strong alternative to conventional petrol and diesel-powered cars. Horse Powertrain believes nearly 50 percent of vehicles globally could be hybrid by 2040, which is why the company is heavily investing in combustion engines, hybrid systems, and range extenders compatible with multiple fuel options.

Renault and Nissan currently have a limited market share in India, and these new hybrid powertrains could help both brands regain momentum in the market. Renault has already reintroduced the Renault Duster in India, with its strong hybrid variant expected to arrive during the festive season.
Nissan is also preparing to launch its upcoming Tekton SUV, which is likely to share the same hybrid powertrain setup. Both models are expected to benefit from Horse Powertrain's strong hybrid technology, backed by Geely's investment and expertise.
