Using A Ford Vehicle? Viral Screenshot Raises E20 Petrol Engine Damage Concerns

Ford India customer care has reportedly warned a user that prolonged use of E20 petrol could significantly damage the engine or emission system. This development was first reported by RushLane and is said to have originated from a Ford vehicle owner.

Ford Warns About E20 Petrol Usage

The debate around ethanol-blended fuel has been growing ever since the government pushed for 20 per cent ethanol blending in petrol. Several users have raised concerns regarding the long-term effects of ethanol-blended fuel, including reduced mileage, corrosion, damage to critical components, and higher maintenance costs. Now, a screenshot allegedly from Ford India customer care has gone viral, claiming that prolonged use of E20 petrol could cause serious damage to Ford vehicles.

The statement reportedly says, "Using fuel with a higher ethanol content (such as E20) may potentially cause damage to the engine or emission system. It could also lead to increased fuel consumption and may affect the validity of your vehicle's warranty." The company also advised the customer to closely monitor the vehicle's functioning and, in case of any abnormal behaviour, visit an authorised service centre immediately.

Government Denies Damage Claims

However, the Indian government and oil marketing companies continue to reject claims that ethanol-blended fuel causes damage to engines or fuel system components. Officials maintain that no vehicle damage has been officially linked to ethanol usage so far.

With rising crude oil prices and India's increasing focus on reducing fuel imports, the government is planning to further increase ethanol blending in the coming years. This could create challenges for older vehicles that were not originally designed for higher ethanol compatibility. The viral statement is said to have been in response to an owner of an older-generation Ford EcoSport.

What Should Consumers Do?

Automakers have already been advised to ensure all new vehicles are E20-compatible, so modern buyers do not need to worry much about compatibility. For existing vehicle owners who are unsure, it is recommended to check with authorised dealerships by providing the vehicle model and manufacturing year. The report was first published by RushLane, and the authenticity of the viral screenshot still needs to be independently verified.
