Electric Car Sales May 2026: Tata Leads Charge As Segment Posts 81.2% YoY Growth
India's electric passenger car segment recorded 26,682 units in May 2026, posting 81.2% YoY growth over the 14,725 units sold in May 2025. Month-on-month, the segment grew 2% over April 2026's 26,160-unit tally, adding 522 units in volume.
The year-on-year volume gain stood at 11,957 units. This follows a strong FY26 run where the EV segment collectively clocked 83.63% YoY growth, with April 2026 itself registering 75.14% YoY and 4.52% MoM growth.

Tata Motors Tops With 38.75% Market Share
Tata Motors led the May 2026 EV sales chart with 10,340 units, commanding a 38.75% market share, up from 35.56% in April. The figure more than doubles the 5,083 units retailed in May 2025, yielding 103.42% YoY growth.
Against April 2026's 9,302 units, Tata also posted 11.16% MoM growth, adding 1,038 units month-on-month and 5,257 units on a year-on-year basis.

Mahindra 2nd; JSW MG Motor 3rd
SUV specialist Mahindra secured 2nd place with 6,210 units in May 2026, more than doubling its May 2025 tally of 2,891 units. Mahindra posted 114.8% YoY and 6.66% MoM growth, with volume gains of 3,319 units YoY and 388 units MoM.
JSW MG Motor held 3rd place with 4,984 units sold. The Windsor EV maker posted 8.37% YoY growth but saw an 8.04% MoM decline compared to the preceding month.

Maruti, VinFast, BYD, Hyundai
Maruti's eVitara sold 1,591 units in May 2026, up 19.53% MoM from 1,331 units in April. VinFast recorded 1,238 units with a 4.11% MoM decline. BYD registered 10.47% YoY and 25.41% MoM growth, retailing 686 units against 621 units in May 2025.
Hyundai's Creta EV posted a sharp dip to 460 units, registering 36.02% YoY and 17.56% MoM declines. The model continues to cede ground from its stronger prior-year performance.
BMW, Kia, Mercedes, Tesla, Others
BMW sold 352 luxury EVs in May 2026, posting 75.12% YoY and 1.15% MoM growth. Kia India surged to 349 units from just 41 units in May 2025, a 751.22% YoY jump, though sales dipped 13.4% MoM.
Mercedes recorded 208 EV units with 70.49% YoY and 76.27% MoM growth. Tesla retailed 35 units, down 18.6% MoM. Volvo sold 29 EVs, while Citroen's eC3 managed 22 units. Other vehicles combined accounted for 178 units.
