Electric Car Sales Jan 2026: Tata Leads As EVs Rise 54.75% YoY
Electric passenger vehicle retail sales in India rose to 18,470 units in January 2026, marking a 54.75% year-on-year increase (+6,535 units) over 11,935 units sold in January 2025, according to FADA data. On a month-on-month basis, volumes improved 23.59% (+3,526 units) compared to 14,944 units recorded in December 2025.
Electric vehicles accounted for 3.60% of total passenger vehicle retail sales in January 2026, compared to 3.94% in December 2025 and 2.49% in January 2025. The top three manufacturers - Tata, MG and Mahindra - together accounted for nearly 89% of total electric passenger vehicle retail sales in January 2026.

Tata Motors retained its leadership position with 8,007 units, registering a 50.71% YoY growth (+2,694 units) over 5,313 units last year. Compared to December 2025, when it sold 6,460 units, Tata recorded a 23.95% MoM increase (+1,547 units). The company held 43.35% market share in January 2026.
JSW MG Motor India followed with 4,703 units, reflecting a 3.82% YoY rise (+173 units) over 4,530 units in January 2025. Month-on-month sales rose 32.14% (+1,144 units) from 3,559 units in December. Market share stood at 25.46%.
Mahindra & Mahindra reported 3,668 units, recording the sharpest YoY growth among leading players at 395.68% (+2,928 units) compared to 740 units last January. On a monthly basis, sales increased 18.98% (+585 units) over 3,083 units sold in December. Market share reached 19.86%.
VinFast retailed 435 units in January 2026. Sales improved 15.69% MoM (+59 units) from 376 units in December. The company accounted for 2.36% market share.
Hyundai Motor India recorded 333 units, reflecting marginal 0.60% YoY growth (+2 units) over 331 units last year. Month-on-month sales increased 26.62% (+70 units) from 263 units in December. Market share stood at 1.80%.
In the premium EV segment, BMW India sold 321 units, marking a 65.46% YoY increase (+127 units) over 194 units last year. However, MoM sales declined 6.96% (-24 units) from 345 units in December.
Kia India posted 309 units, registering a 505.88% YoY rise (+258 units) over 51 units last January, though MoM volumes dipped slightly 1.28% (-4 units) compared to 313 units in December.
BYD India reported 231 units, reflecting a 31.66% YoY decline (-107 units) from 338 units and a 2.53% MoM dip (-6 units) from 237 units in December.
Maruti Suzuki recorded 215 units in January 2026, compared to just 9 units in December, resulting in a 2,288.89% MoM increase (+206 units). Market share stood at 1.16%.
Mercedes-Benz India sold 70 units, down 32.69% YoY (-34 units) but up 2.94% MoM (+2 units) from 68 units in December. Citroen India reported 41 units, reflecting an 85.04% YoY decline (-233 units) and an 8.89% MoM decrease (-4 units).
Tesla registered 37 units, down 45.59% MoM (-31 units) from 68 units in December.
Volvo Cars India sold 36 units, marking a 24.14% YoY increase (+7 units) while declining 2.70% MoM (-1 unit) from 37 units in December. Other manufacturers together accounted for 64 units, down 20.99% MoM (-17 units).
