Flush Door Handles Banned In China From 2027: Is India Next?

Flush Door Handles: A Safety Risk In China

According to an Autocar report, the Chinese government has announced a new regulation for electric cars sold in China. As per the new rule, all EVs sold in the country must feature mechanical door handles, both on the inside and outside. However, models that are already in the final stages of development will be granted a grace period until January 2029.

Flush door handles have been gaining popularity globally, with many manufacturers adopting this design trend. In India, several automakers are offering flush door handles, even on lower variants. Consumers often see this as a premium feature, which enhances the overall experience of opening and closing the doors.

However, this design can pose serious safety risks, especially during accidents or fire-related incidents. In some recent cases reported in China, flush door handles could not be opened from the outside during emergencies, delaying rescue efforts. As a result, passenger safety was compromised, leading to severe injuries and, in some cases, fatalities.

To prevent such incidents, the Chinese government has stepped in to ban flush door handles on electric cars. The move aims to improve safety, as mechanical door handles are more reliable, easier to operate, and require less maintenance, while ensuring quicker access during emergencies.

The trend of flush door handles is still growing in India, and it may take time to determine whether this technology is necessary for Indian conditions. But, Indian automakers may start reconsidering the disadvantages of flush door handles and push-to-release mechanisms, and work towards making them safer for Indian users. At the same time, manufacturers continue to claim that flush door handles help improve a vehicle's aerodynamic efficiency.
