Car Retail Sales September 2026: Maruti Leads, Mahindra Edges Past Tata By 89 Units
Car retail sales in September 2026 reached 4,27,213 units, up 32.10 per cent from 3,23,391 units in September 2025, according to FADA data. Volumes also rose 6.17 per cent over August 2026's 4,02,398 units.
Car Retail Sales September 2026: Brand-Wise Numbers
Maruti Suzuki stayed on top with 1,69,132 units and a 39.59 per cent market share, up from 1,67,200 units in August 2026. Mahindra took second place with 57,343 units, 89 units ahead of Tata Motors' 57,254 units. Tata Motors' market share slipped to 13.40 per cent from 13.76 per cent a year earlier. Hyundai came next with 50,201 units, up from 38,187 units in September 2025.
Toyota Kirloskar Motor sold 28,050 units for a 6.57 per cent share, and Kia India climbed to 26,663 units from 18,274 units, with its share rising to 6.24 per cent. Skoda Group sold 8,479 units, and its share eased to 1.98 per cent from 2.31 per cent in September 2025. JSW MG posted 6,475 units against 5,698 units a year earlier, though its share declined to 1.52 per cent.
Honda Cars sold 5,283 units, up from 3,707 units in September 2025, and Renault grew to 3,410 units from 2,562 units. Nissan and VinFast logged 2,967 units and 2,964 units respectively. BMW India sold 1,970 units, up from 1,357 units a year earlier, while Mercedes-Benz grew to 1,768 units, with its share easing to 0.41 per cent from 0.43 per cent.
Force Motors reported 1,332 units against 511 units a year ago, taking its share to 0.31 per cent from 0.16 per cent. Stellantis Group (Jeep and Citroen) rose to 1,076 units from 641 units. BYD and Jaguar sold 836 units and 581 units respectively, while the others category slipped to 1,429 units from 2,022 units in September 2025.

Year-To-Date Sales And Fuel-Wise Share
Year-to-date passenger vehicle sales stand at 25,44,187 units, a 24.48 per cent rise over 20,43,813 units in the same period last year. Urban and rural markets grew 32.11 per cent and 32.09 per cent year-on-year respectively.
In the fuel-wise split for September 2026, petrol and ethanol vehicles hold a 41.27 per cent share, followed by CNG and LPG at 23.11 per cent and diesel at 17.74 per cent. Hybrids account for 9.44 per cent and electric vehicles for 8.45 per cent.
