BYD India Teases DM-i Plug-in Hybrid Tech: Sealion 6 Or Atto 2 PHEV Launch Soon?
BYD India has officially teased its DM-i plug-in hybrid technology for the Indian market, confirming for the first time that a PHEV model is coming. The teaser explicitly names the "DM-i Super Plug-in Hybrid EV" powertrain, marking a direct shift from the brand's all-electric lineup in India.
Two models are in the frame. Both the Sealion 6 PHEV and the Atto 2 have been spotted testing on Indian roads in recent months, and both are sold globally with DM-i technology. BYD India currently retails the Atto 3, eMAX 7, Seal, and Sealion 7, all pure EVs.
What Is BYD's DM-i Tech?
DM-i stands for Dual Mode-intelligent, a plug-in hybrid architecture that prioritises electric driving while the petrol engine handles range extension and efficiency support. BYD describes the system as "Super Intelligent Efficient Electric Beyond Hybrid," reflecting that EV-first philosophy.
Combined range on DM-i-equipped models can exceed 1,000 km depending on battery size and the fuel tank, directly addressing range anxiety without requiring charging infrastructure. Let's take a look at what BYD could bring to India...
Sealion 6 DM-i
The Sealion 6 PHEV was showcased at Auto Expo 2025 and has since been spotted testing undisguised in India. It is offered globally with 1.5-litre naturally aspirated and turbo-petrol engine options, paired with either an 18.3kWh or 26.6kWh battery pack.

The 1.5 NA PHEV is FWD-only, produces a combined 218hp, and offers up to 140 km of electric-only range on the NEDC cycle. The 1.5 turbo-petrol PHEV gets standard AWD, peaks at 344hp, delivers up to 128 km of electric range, and carries a combined driving range of 1,092 km.
Atto 2 DM-i
The Atto 2 pairs a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine with either a 7.8kWh or 18kWh battery pack, with system outputs of 166hp and 212hp respectively. BYD claims WLTP combined ranges of 928 km and 998 km for the two variants, with a pure electric range of approximately 39 km for both.

Test mules of the BYD Atto 2 were spotted in India as far back as August 2025, with a local launch under evaluation for some time. At 4.3 metres long, the compact SUV is well-suited to urban use and could be priced around Rs 25 lakh in India.
