BYD's First Hybrid SUV For India Could Deliver 1000km Range With DM-i Tech
BYD is set to introduce its first plug-in hybrid electric vehicle technology in the Indian market today. The company's advanced DM-i technology is expected to debut in India, offering a claimed driving range of up to 1,000km on a full tank and charge combination.
BYD's First Hybrid SUV For India Launch Expectations
Chinese car manufacturer BYD, one of the world's leading electric vehicle brands, is expected to launch either the Atto 2 or the Sealion 6 PHEV in the Indian market. These models will complement the company's existing lineup of fully electric vehicles and mark BYD's entry into the plug-in hybrid segment in India.
1000 km Range

Although BYD has not officially confirmed the model it plans to introduce, industry speculation suggests that the Atto 2 and Sealion 6 are among the strongest possibilities. Depending on the battery pack and powertrain configuration, both models are capable of delivering a combined driving range of up to 1,000km.
DM-i Technology
The upcoming vehicles will feature BYD's DM-i hybrid technology, which intelligently switches between electric and hybrid driving modes to maximise efficiency and reduce range anxiety. The petrol engine supports the battery whenever additional power is required, while the vehicle can operate in pure electric mode for a significant portion of everyday driving.
Hybrid And Electric Power Combined

The powertrain is expected to combine a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated or turbocharged petrol engine, depending on the model. The engine functions as both a generator and range extender, helping maintain battery charge levels during long journeys. The battery can also be charged externally, while regenerative braking further improves efficiency by recovering energy during deceleration. Battery pack options could range from 7.8kWh to 18kWh.
FWD And AWD Options Likely
BYD could introduce both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive variants, as both configurations are already available in global markets. The naturally aspirated petrol engine is expected to power the Atto 2, while the more powerful Sealion 6 could feature a turbocharged engine. Combined with electric power, both models are capable of delivering exceptional efficiency and long-distance driving capability.
Expected Pricing
The Atto 2 is expected to serve as the entry-level PHEV offering and could be priced between Rs 25 lakh and Rs 30 lakh (ex-showroom). The larger and more premium Sealion 6 is likely to be positioned in the Rs 35 lakh to Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom) range. Both vehicles are expected to offer an EV-like driving experience while significantly reducing fuel consumption and range-related concerns.
