BYD To Unveil First Hybrid Car For India Launching On June 9 – 1,000 Km Range, DM-i Tech

Chinese EV manufacturer BYD will launch its first plug-in hybrid vehicle for the Indian market this month. The new model could be either the Atto 2 or the Sealion 6, both of which are expected to use a PHEV (Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicle) powertrain.

BYD is one of the world's leading electric vehicle manufacturers. The company currently sells popular models such as the Atto 3, Sealion 7, eMAX 7 and Seal in the Indian market. Now, the manufacturer is set to debut a new model for India on June 9, 2026.

These upcoming vehicles are expected to be a PHEV equipped with BYD's DM-i technology, which combines the smooth driving experience of an EV with the practicality and convenience of a hybrid vehicle.

Super Hybrid With DM-i Technology

BYD

These hybrid vehicles use BYD's advanced Blade Battery technology and are designed to deliver excellent efficiency and long-distance driving capability. In BYD's DM-i system, the electric motor handles most driving situations, delivering smooth performance, instant torque and an EV-like driving experience.

The petrol engine primarily acts as a power generator to charge the battery when required and can also assist in powering the vehicle under certain driving conditions. This setup allows drivers to enjoy electric mobility for daily commutes while benefiting from the extended range and flexibility of a petrol engine on longer journeys.

BYD could introduce the Atto 2 PHEV, which is available globally with a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine paired with either a 7.8 kWh or 18.3 kWh battery pack. The model claims a combined driving range of up to 1,000 km while delivering extremely high fuel efficiency.

Another possibility is the Sealion 6 DM-i, which also uses a 1.5-litre naturally aspirated petrol engine and plug-in hybrid technology. The SUV is claimed to offer a driving range of around 1,000 km on a full tank and fully charged battery.

Hybrid Market in India

The Indian market is gradually moving towards alternative powertrain technologies, and plug-in hybrids could play a crucial role in bridging the gap between conventional hybrid vehicles and fully electric cars.

BYD

BYD has already established a strong presence in India through its EV portfolio, and the introduction of a plug-in hybrid model could further strengthen its position in the market. Brands like Toyota, Maruti Suzuki and Honda already offer hybrid vehicles that continue to generate strong sales volumes.

The Toyota Innova Hycross, in particular, has emerged as one of the most popular premium MPVs in India. Seeing the growing demand for fuel-efficient and electrified vehicles, BYD now appears ready to enter the segment with its own plug-in hybrid offering, potentially bringing a new level of efficiency and technology to the Indian market.
