BYD Showcases DM-i Plug-In Hybrid Technology In India, Confirms Seal U Launch This Year

BYD has officially introduced its DM-i (Dual Mode Intelligent) plug-in hybrid technology in India, marking a significant expansion beyond its existing battery electric vehicle portfolio. The Chinese carmaker says the new technology will serve as a bridge between conventional internal combustion vehicles and fully electric models while addressing concerns related to charging infrastructure and long-distance travel.

The company also confirmed that the first model based on the new platform for India will be the Seal U plug-in hybrid SUV, which is scheduled to arrive later this year. The launch will mark BYD India's entry into the growing plug-in hybrid vehicle (PHEV) segment.

BYD DM-I Platform

What Is BYD's DM-i Technology?

Unlike conventional hybrid systems that rely primarily on the petrol engine, BYD's DM-i setup follows an electric-first approach. In most driving conditions, the vehicle operates using electric power, while the petrol engine functions mainly as a generator or provides additional support when required during high-speed cruising or under heavy loads.

The system combines a high-efficiency petrol engine, an electric motor and a battery pack. BYD claims the technology delivers the smoothness and efficiency of an EV while eliminating range anxiety associated with fully electric vehicles.

Over 1,200 Km Claimed Driving Range

One of the key highlights of the DM-i powertrain is its claimed combined driving range of more than 1,200 kilometres on a full tank of fuel and a fully charged battery. BYD says the technology has been developed to maximise efficiency while reducing fuel consumption during long-distance travel.

The system uses a 1.5-litre Xiaoyun petrol engine that delivers a claimed thermal efficiency of 43.04 percent. The engine is primarily used to generate electricity or assist propulsion when required, helping improve overall efficiency.

BYD Seal U Confirmed For India

During the technology showcase, BYD confirmed that the Seal U will become the brand's first plug-in hybrid vehicle for the Indian market. The SUV will be positioned as an alternative for buyers seeking the benefits of electric mobility without depending entirely on charging infrastructure.

BYD currently sells four electric vehicles in India - the Atto 3, Seal sedan, eMAX 7 and Sealion 7. The introduction of the Seal U and DM-i technology will allow the company to expand its reach into a new segment while complementing its existing EV range.

Rajeev Chauhan, Head of Electric Passenger Vehicles Business at BYD India said, "The introduction of DM-i technology marks a pivotal step in our commitment to making sustainable mobility more versatile and accessible for Indian consumers. By enabling electric-first driving for daily use while seamlessly suppor.ng long-distance travel, DM-i addresses some of the most pressing barriers to the adoption of sustainable motoring in India. With this innovation, we are bringing a new technology to Indian consumers, and also shaping a smarter, more flexible pathway towards sustainable transportation."
