Bharat Taxi Launches In India — Promises Lower Fares Than Ola & Uber

The Indian government-backed cooperative mobility platform Bharat Taxi has launched operations in the Delhi-NCR region. It aims to compete directly with Ola and Uber by offering more affordable fares. Unlike private ride-hailing platforms, Bharat Taxi operates as a driver-owned initiative supported by the government.

Bharat Taxi Mobility Platform Launched

The government describes it as the world's largest driver-owned mobility platform, launched under the vision of 'Sahkar Se Samriddhi'. Under this model, drivers act as both owners and shareholders, which is a relatively new approach for India's mobility sector.

For many years, Ola and Uber have dominated the taxi market. While these platforms introduced convenience through digital booking systems, many independent drivers faced challenges due to commission structures and a lack of ownership.

To address this, Bharat Taxi has been introduced as a driver-owned digital platform offering mobility services at more transparent and affordable prices. The service operates on a zero-commission model, and the pricing is stable even during peak hours, late nights, or adverse weather conditions.

Cheaper Fares Than Ola & Uber

Drivers using the platform pay a nominal fee of ₹30/day. Pricing remains regulated and transparent, unlike that of the private platforms, where fares fluctuate based on demand. As there are no intermediaries, Bharat Taxi fares are expected to be up to 30% cheaper than those of Ola and Uber.

The Sarathis are also provided with benefits, including ₹5 lakh personal accident insurance and ₹5 lakh family health insurance. They also have the flexibility to work with other platforms simultaneously, without restrictive contractual clauses.

The initiative also promotes employment opportunities for women through programs such as Bike Didi, encouraging female participation in the mobility sector. The platform integrates services like DigiLocker, UMANG, and API Setu.

It is also linked to emergency services, supported by around 35 dedicated safety booths in Delhi. Currently, more than 3 lakh drivers have registered, with over 10,000 rides taking place daily across Delhi NCR and Gujarat, where operations have begun.

The government plans to expand Bharat Taxi nationwide by 2029, aiming to broaden its operations and bring more competition to the ride-hailing industry. The Bharat Taxi Sarathis is registered under the Multi-State Cooperative Societies Act, 2002. So, Drivers can also buy shares in the platform, making them stakeholders and partners in the mobility ecosystem, where 5 shares cost 500 rupees.
