India Gets Dedicated ADAS Test Track: ARAI’s New Pune Facility Explained

ARAI has established a new testing facility in Pune to evaluate ADAS safety features under real Indian road and traffic conditions. As more vehicles are being equipped with advanced driver assistance technologies, this dedicated facility aims to ensure these systems are tested more effectively and perform reliably in India's unique driving environment.

The Automotive Research Association of India has developed this facility in Pune with an estimated investment of around ₹40 crore, aiming to support the testing of India-made ADAS-equipped vehicles, which are steadily increasing in number.

Indian roads and traffic conditions are among the most challenging in the world. Driving environments overseas differ significantly from those in India, where dense traffic, unpredictable road users, and diverse conditions are common. Recognising this, ARAI has established this facility to test ADAS systems specifically for Indian conditions.

This will help ensure that ADAS technology functions more reliably on Indian roads. Many ADAS features, such as Automatic Emergency Braking, are primarily developed for international markets and can sometimes perform inconsistently in Indian driving conditions.

India also records one of the highest numbers of road accidents globally each year. As a result, there is a growing need for advanced safety systems such as the ADAS, not just in premium vehicles but also in mass-market cars. This new facility will recreate real-world traffic scenarios for more accurate test results.

The facility includes four lanes merging into two lanes, S-curves, intersections, roads without lane markings, and dedicated parking areas. It also features India-specific crash dummies, including two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws, to better reflect real-world traffic conditions.

Reji Mathai, Director of ARAI, said, "ADAS are pivotal in enhancing road safety, and ARAI remains committed to driving the adoption of safe, smart, and sustainable mobility solutions across the industry. Our ADAS smart city track represents a landmark initiative. This facility will play a crucial role in advancing ADAS capabilities by empowering manufacturers to deliver best-in-class safety solutions to consumers."

India has its own Bharat NCAP safety assessment program, which crash-tests vehicles and provides safety ratings. Globally, vehicles equipped with ADAS often receive additional safety points, and Bharat NCAP is also expected to adopt a similar evaluation approach. This new ADAS testing facility is therefore likely to play an important role in future safety assessments.

Bharat NCAP 2.0 is expected to be implemented by 2027, where ADAS and other advanced safety technologies will play a significant role in safety ratings. Many ADAS suppliers are already calibrating these technologies specifically for Indian driving conditions, and further localisation is expected to reduce costs while improving passenger safety.
