Apple is set to introduce the new Apple CarPlay with the release of iOS 27. This major update is expected to bring significant advantages for iPhone users over Android Auto, especially in day-to-day driving and connectivity experience.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are currently the two most dominant smartphone integration systems in the automotive world. Both offer seamless connectivity between smartphones and vehicle infotainment systems, making navigation, calls, music, and apps easier to access while driving.

It will not only upgrade the infotainment screen but also extend its control to the digital instrument cluster. It also supports video playback apps, allowing users to browse and watch videos directly on their car's infotainment screen but only while in parking.

The digital cluster will receive a fresh Apple-themed layout and will now support navigation, fuel gauge display, battery status, and other driving information. This makes the car's screen feel more like a fully integrated in-built system rather than just an app projected onto the display.

2. Complete In-Car Control

Without exiting Apple CarPlay, drivers can control air conditioning, heated seats, drive modes, music, and calls directly. This works on vehicles where such functions are integrated into the infotainment system, including brands like Mini, BMW, and Mercedes-Benz.

In comparison, while using Android Auto, drivers often need to exit the app to access AC controls, drive modes, and other infotainment-linked features. This makes Apple CarPlay feel more like a universal vehicle controller rather than a separate software layer.

With support from Apple Intelligence, the system can intelligently read routes, messages, and user data to assist with navigation, reminders, calendars, and personal tasks. Through the Apple Home app, the system can automatically open garage doors once the vehicle enters a geofenced location. This makes the connected experience more practical and advanced compared to Android Auto.

Currently, Apple Inc. has rolled out the developer version of iOS 27 for testing. The public beta version is expected to arrive next month, while the final rollout will happen during Apple's September 2026 launch event.

Existing Apple users can update their current devices once the rollout begins. However, to experience the full set of features, users will need CarPlay Ultra, which comes with the required hardware support for these advanced integrations.
