2026 BMW X5 (Fifth-Gen) Unveiled With 5 Powertrain Options

German luxury carmaker BMW has unveiled the fifth-generation X5, bringing a redesigned exterior, a completely new cabin and the widest range of powertrains ever offered on the luxury SUV. The 2026 BMW X5 line-up spans petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid variants alongside the first-ever all-electric iX5, with a hydrogen-powered version confirmed to join later.

The new 2026 BMW X5 adopts the Bavarian firm's Neue Klasse design language while retaining familiar SUV proportions, and gets BMW's latest Panoramic iDrive display system inside. Production of the BMW X5 will begin at the Spartanburg plant in the USA in August, ahead of a global market launch.

2026 BMW X5: Exterior Design

The 2026 BMW X5's front end is taller and more upright, with a redesigned illuminated kidney grille flanked by new "double-X" LED light signatures. BMW says the units combine daytime running lights, indicators and low-beam headlights into a single element. Adaptive LED headlights with cornering lights, matrix high beam and non-dazzling "Selective Beam" tech come as standard.

From the side, the SUV gets flush-fitting windows and new electrically operated "BMW Winglet" door handles integrated into the B- and C-pillars. At the rear are slimmer LED tail-lamps and a wider stance. The M60e xDrive gets a more aggressive look, while M Sport and M Sport Pro packages continue. Buyers can pick from 11 exterior colours and wheels from 21 to 23 inches.

The X5 measures 4,994mm long and 2,000mm wide, with a 3,035mm wheelbase. Boot space stands at 655 litres, expanding to 1,850 litres with the rear seats folded, while plug-in hybrid variants offer 525-1,680 litres.

The 2026 BMW X5's cabin gets a new dashboard layout with fewer physical controls, built around BMW's Panoramic iDrive display that spans the base of the windscreen, a 17.9-inch central touchscreen, a 3D head-up display and an optional passenger display. A redesigned steering wheel is also part of the update.

New trim options include optional slate and glass accents with extended ambient lighting. Other highlights include a standard panoramic glass roof, sports seats, optional ventilated and massaging front seats, soft-close electric doors, wireless charging, over-the-air updates and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos. Four-zone climate control is available, and rear passengers get their own climate touchscreen.

The SUV gets BMW's latest Level 2 driver assistance suite, including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, highway and urban driving assist, parking assist and automatic emergency braking, alongside multiple airbags and electronic stability control.

The 2026 BMW X5 becomes the first BMW model offered with five distinct drive systems: petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery-electric and, later, hydrogen fuel-cell. The line-up comprises the X5 40 xDrive petrol, X5 40d xDrive diesel, X5 50e xDrive and X5 M60e xDrive plug-in hybrids, and the all-electric iX5 60 xDrive.

The X5 40 xDrive uses a 3.0-litre turbo-petrol six-cylinder with 48V mild-hybrid assistance, making 400hp and 580Nm, while the X5 40d xDrive diesel makes 313hp and 670Nm. The X5 50e xDrive PHEV combines a 3.0-litre petrol engine with an electric motor for 489hp and 700Nm, while the range-topping M60e xDrive makes 612hp and 800Nm. Both PHEVs offer an electric-only WLTP range of up to 102km and support up to 11kW AC charging.

The iX5 runs a 141kWh battery pack on an 800V architecture, using new cylindrical cells fitted for the first time in this model. Its dual-motor setup produces 578hp and 805Nm, with a claimed 0-100kph time of 4.6 seconds and a 210kph top speed. BMW claims a WLTP range of up to 845km, with DC fast charging up to 460kW enabling a 10-80 percent charge in 23 minutes. The iX5 also supports 22kW AC charging and bidirectional charging.

Adaptive suspension is standard across the range, with Adaptive Chassis Control and adaptive air suspension available on select variants. Also showcased was the upcoming iX5 Hydrogen which is expected to use a fuel cell system paired with BMW's Hydrogen Flat Storage tech, with the Bavarian firm targeting a range of up to 750km.

2026 BMW X5: Production And Launch Timeline

Production of the fifth-generation X5 begins at BMW's Spartanburg plant in the USA in August 2026, marking the first time an all-electric BMW will be built there. Petrol and diesel variants go on sale globally from late November 2026, with the iX5 and plug-in hybrid versions following in early 2027.
