Young Driver Launches New Training Sessions At Former Top Gear Track With Suzuki Swift
Young Driver, the UK's largest under-17 driver training programme, has announced a new venue at Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey. This location, known for its association with Top Gear, will host regular sessions for young drivers aged 9 to 17. Participants will have the opportunity to drive Suzuki Swifts, successors to the Suzuki Liana, which was featured on Top Gear as the Reasonably Priced Car.
On May 25th, Young Driver's first group of students experienced the new venue. They met the actual Suzuki Liana used by celebrities on Top Gear before driving Young Driver's new Suzuki Swifts. Some lucky teens even got to drive a Porsche 911 around the famous track. The next event at Dunsfold is scheduled for June 15th.
Dunsfold is one of ten new venues added to Young Driver's network, bringing their total to over 80 sites across the UK. Other new locations include Canterbury, Cheshire County Showground, Dundee, Hull, Old Trafford (Manchester), Plumpton Racecourse (East Sussex), Shrewsbury, South Cerney Airfield (Gloucestershire), and Sunderland.
Young Driver aims to instil safe driving habits long before teens get their provisional licences. Statistics show that one in five newly qualified drivers crashes within six months of passing their test. However, for those who have trained with Young Driver, this figure drops to less than 4%, marking an over 80% reduction in accidents.
The programme offers lessons on private land designed as realistic road systems with signs and junctions. Students can choose between thirty or sixty-minute sessions starting from £46.99. Lessons are available for disabled youngsters too and must be booked in advance through Young Driver's website or by phone.
Casey O’Loughlin, Young Driver’s senior field manager, stated: "Dunsfold is a dream location for a driving school. We might be based on a track made famous for fast cars and celebrity lap times, but our sessions are all about calm control, not speed."
Unique Driving Experiences
Younger children aged 4-9 can enjoy driving the Firefly Sport EV at selected venues. For those aged 10-14 seeking off-road experiences, the Polaris Youth Ranger offers an exciting option. Additionally, Young Driver Exclusive provides opportunities to drive high-end vehicles like a Porsche 911 or Bentley Flying Spur.
Young Driver also offers classic car experiences with models like a Morris Minor Convertible and Austin Seven available for driving enthusiasts. For those interested in unique vehicles, there's even an ex-service fire engine available for driving experiences.
Sustainability Initiatives
Young Driver is committed to sustainability by offering carbon-negative driving lessons. All printed materials use carbon capture paper and Woodland Trust FSC paper is used in their office operations. A free Drive Diary helps pupils monitor progress and is also accessible via the Young Driver app.
The initiative started in 2009 with the goal of teaching youngsters over time to create safer drivers from age 17 onwards. With over 1.5 million lessons delivered so far, Young Driver continues to expand its reach and impact across the UK.
