WagonR To Sport A New Hybrid Engine: All The Details Here
The WagonR, a popular choice in India for its reliability and spaciousness, might soon become the first minicar globally to feature a full hybrid system. Suzuki is developing a new-generation model, expected to launch in Japan later this year. Reports suggest this version could include a comprehensive hybrid setup, marking a significant advancement for the WagonR.
Suzuki's innovative hybrid system for the upcoming WagonR will integrate an electric motor with the existing Solio and AGS (Auto Gear Shift) drive motor. This system pairs with a 660cc, inline 3-cylinder DOHC petrol engine, producing 54 PS and 58 Nm of torque. The electric motor adds another 10 PS and 29 Nm, linked through an electric continuously variable transmission.

New Features & Dimensions
Beyond the hybrid powertrain, the new-gen WagonR will see several enhancements. Notably, traditional rear doors will be replaced by sliding ones, aligning with trends in Japanese tall-boy hatchbacks. This change facilitates easier passenger access and loading of diverse cargo types. Additionally, seats will offer high customizability to suit user preferences.
In terms of size, the new WagonR in Japan is anticipated to measure 3,395 mm in length, 1,475 mm in width, and 1,650 mm in height. It will have a wheelbase of 2,460 mm and weigh around 850 kg. Pricing is expected to start at 1.3 million yen (approximately Rs 7.65 lakh), with top variants reaching up to 1.9 million yen (Rs 11.19 lakh).
Maruti's Hybrid Plans for India
For India, Maruti plans to introduce an affordable hybrid system for smaller cars like the WagonR, Swift, Dzire, and Fronx. This setup will likely pair with a 1.2-litre, three-cylinder petrol engine. While Maruti could leverage Toyota's hybrid technology, it would be costly for small cars; hence Maruti is developing its own cost-effective solution.
The introduction of hybrid technology by Maruti hinges on government policies favoring EVs over hybrids currently. For instance, EVs enjoy a GST rate of just 5%, alongside various state-level tax waivers and subsidies under FAME-II.
Government Policies Impacting Hybrid Adoption
Conversely, strong hybrids face a higher GST rate of 28%, plus an additional compensation cess that raises the total tax burden to about 43%. They also lack tax waivers or subsidies available to EVs. Some states like Uttar Pradesh plan registration tax waivers for strong hybrids starting in 2024; similar measures may follow elsewhere.
To significantly boost strong hybrids nationwide incentives are necessary. Without such support across all states hybrids might struggle against fully electric vehicles which benefit from more favourable policies.
