Volvo XC60 Becomes Best-Selling Model In Company History With Over 2.7 Million Sales
The Volvo XC60 has become the best-selling model in Volvo's history, surpassing the iconic Volvo 240 with over 2.7 million units sold. Since its introduction in 2008, this mid-size SUV has been popular among drivers who appreciate safety, quality, and a premium driving experience. Initially manufactured only in Europe, it later became the first global Volvo model produced in China to support local sales.
In 2018, the XC60 earned the title of World Car of the Year. The current generation introduced plug-in hybrid options to a wider audience and was Europe's top-selling plug-in hybrid last year. The 2026 model year brings a refreshed design, enhanced user experience, improved comfort, and a more responsive infotainment system.
Volvo's commitment to safety is evident in both the XC60 and its predecessor, the Volvo 240. Introduced in 1974, the 240 set safety standards with features like crumple zones and a reinforced passenger compartment. It was also among the first to offer enhanced side-impact protection and introduced the Child Booster Cushion in 1978.
The XC60 continues this legacy with advanced safety technologies such as City Safety, which debuted in 2008 as the world's first standard low-speed automatic emergency braking system. In another world-first, Oncoming Lane Mitigation was introduced in 2017 to help steer drivers back into their lane if they drift into oncoming traffic.
The refreshed XC60 plays a crucial role in Volvo Cars' electrification strategy by offering pure electric driving alongside a combustion engine for those not ready to go fully electric. According to Volvo Cars' data, about half of the distance covered by their latest plug-in hybrid models globally is powered solely by electricity.
The production of the original Volvo 240 spanned from 1974 to 1993, with over 2.6 million units built across various locations including Gothenburg and Kalmar in Sweden and Ghent in Belgium. The final unit rolled off the line at Torslanda plant on May 5, 1993.
Volvo Cars' Global Presence
Volvo Cars was founded in 1927 and is now one of the most recognised car brands worldwide, selling vehicles in over 100 countries. The company aims to become a fully electric car maker while reducing its carbon footprint with a goal of net-zero emissions by 2040.
In December 2024, Volvo Cars employed around 42,600 full-time staff. Its headquarters are located in Gothenburg, Sweden, where product development and marketing functions are also based. Production plants are situated in Gothenburg; Ghent; South Carolina; Chengdu; Daqing; and Taizhou.
For the full year of 2024, Volvo Car Group achieved a record core operating profit of SEK 27 billion and revenue reached an all-time high of SEK 400.2 billion with global sales hitting a record of over 763,000 cars.
"Growing up in Sweden in the 1980s," says Susanne Hägglund from Volvo Cars, "the Volvo 240 was iconic." She adds that today’s XC60 has taken over as both family favourite and top-seller for Volvo.
