Volvo India Discontinues S90 Sedan: Here's Why

Volvo India has removed the S90 midsize luxury sedan from its offerings, leaving only SUVs in its lineup. The S90, which competed with the Mercedes E-Class and BMW 5 Series, was launched in a facelifted version in October 2021. Globally, it received another facelift this April. In India, the S90 was equipped with a 2.0-litre mild-hybrid petrol engine.

Volvo's SUV-Only Strategy

The S90 was available in a single B5 trim, featuring a 250hp four-cylinder engine. It boasted premium features like a 360-degree camera, four-zone climate control, and a high-end audio system. Despite its luxurious interior and local assembly in India, sales were low due to competition from newer models of the E-Class and 5 Series.

Volvo has already introduced an updated version of the S90 globally with enhanced design and technology features. This includes a larger touchscreen and improved powertrain options. Additionally, Volvo unveiled an all-electric sibling named the ES90 in March, offering up to 700km range from a 106kWh battery.

Future Plans for Volvo

While there is no indication of these updated models launching in India, Volvo is focusing on expanding its electric SUV lineup. The company plans to introduce the all-electric EX30 SUV by late 2025 and is considering local assembly for it. Following this will be the flagship EX90 all-electric SUV next year.

The last recorded price for the locally assembled S90 was Rs 68.25 lakh (ex-showroom). However, advancements in technology and powertrain options by competitors left the S90 trailing behind. As a result, Volvo's decision to focus solely on SUVs aligns with its global strategy towards electrification.

DriveSpark Thinks

Volvo's shift towards an SUV-only lineup reflects its commitment to adapting to market trends and consumer preferences. By concentrating on electric SUVs like the EX30 and EX90, Volvo aims to strengthen its position in India's growing electric vehicle market.
