Volvo ES90 Unveils Advanced 800V Technology For Faster Charging And Extended Range
The Volvo ES90 introduces advanced 800-volt technology, enhancing its range and charging speed beyond previous electric models. This innovation allows the ES90 to gain up to 300 kilometres of range in just 10 minutes and offers a total driving range of up to 700 kilometres. The new system promises faster charging, improved performance, and greater efficiency compared to traditional 400-volt systems.
"Our 800V technology marks another significant technological upgrade for our customers as we move towards full electrification," says Anders Bell, our chief engineering and technology officer. "It makes our electric cars even more efficient, helps you charge your electric Volvo faster and go further on a single charge."
The ES90's 800-volt system includes upgraded components like battery cells, e-motors, and inverters. This setup delivers more power and range without increasing current levels. By generating less heat, the system supports faster charging at up to 350 kW without straining the electrical components. Additionally, lighter e-motors contribute to reduced vehicle weight, enhancing both efficiency and acceleration.
Volvo has developed new battery management software in-house, improving the charging experience significantly. This software reduces the time needed to charge from 10% to 80% by up to 30%, now taking only about 20 minutes. The integration of adaptive charging software from Breathe Battery Technologies plays a crucial role in this advancement.
The ES90 also focuses on sustainability by incorporating recycled and natural materials. For instance, 29% of its aluminium is recycled, along with 16% of polymers and 18% of steel. The wood panels inside are crafted from FSC-certified wood. A unique battery passport using blockchain technology tracks raw materials like lithium and cobalt, providing transparency about their origins and environmental impact.
The ES90 will be unveiled globally on March 5. Interested individuals can watch the livestream at es90event.volvocars.com for more details on this innovative vehicle.
