Volvo Cars Expands Production Of Best-Selling XC60 SUV At US Plant In South Carolina

Volvo Cars has announced plans to expand its production line at the Ridgeville plant near Charleston, South Carolina, by adding the XC60 mid-size SUV. This facility, which also produces the fully electric EX90, will begin manufacturing the XC60 in late 2026. The XC60 has been Volvo's top-selling model globally and is particularly popular among US customers.

In the first half of 2025, sales of the XC60 in the US increased by nearly 23%. "Adding the XC60 to our Charleston production line will further strengthen its position and attractiveness in the competitive US market, while supporting and creating American manufacturing jobs," stated Håkan Samuelsson, CEO of Volvo Cars. "It is also in line with our ambition to build where we sell and reinforces our long-term commitment to the US market, where we are celebrating our 70th anniversary and have sold over 5 million cars."

The XC60 holds significant importance for Volvo Cars on a global scale. It recently surpassed the 240 wagon as Volvo's all-time best-selling model, with over 2.7 million units on roads worldwide. In the US, it remains the most popular Volvo model due to its blend of safety features, luxury elements, and Scandinavian design.

This year alone, more than 33% of Volvo's US sales have been attributed to the XC60, with 25% of these being plug-in hybrids. As one of the top four luxury plug-in hybrids in America, it serves as a crucial step towards electrification for many customers.

Volvo's Ridgeville plant was established nearly a decade ago in 2015. It currently assembles models like the EX90 and Polestar 3 SUVs. The facility has seen investments totaling USD 1.3 billion over ten years to enhance its capabilities for future demands. Upgrades include expansions in both body and paint shops and a state-of-the-art battery pack production line.

The addition of XC60 production will help secure local jobs at this high-capacity plant. With options ranging from mild hybrid to plug-in hybrid versions, Volvo aims to cater to diverse customer needs while continuing to produce fully electric models like the EX90 SUV.
