Volvo Cars And Google Strengthen Partnership With Gemini Integration For Enhanced Automotive Innovation
Volvo Cars has announced an expanded collaboration with Google to enhance the delivery of Android Automotive OS updates for Volvo models featuring Google built-in. This includes the integration of Google Gemini, showcased at Google I/O 2025 in a Volvo EX90. Additionally, Volvo will serve as a reference hardware platform for Google's future Android car developments.
Patrick Brady, Vice President of Android for Cars at Google, stated, "For years, Google and Volvo Cars have collaborated closely to bring cutting-edge technology to connected cars. We're excited to deepen this partnership, accelerating the pace of innovation that will not only improve the driving experience for Volvo customers but also set new benchmarks for the automotive industry."

With the introduction of Google Gemini in vehicles, Volvo drivers will be among the first to experience advanced conversational AI technology. This feature allows natural conversations while driving, enabling tasks like crafting messages or translating them before sending. It can also answer questions from the car's manual or provide destination details, reducing distractions and cognitive load.
The partnership ensures that Volvo cars will be at the forefront of receiving new Android features and performance enhancements. By becoming a reference hardware platform, Volvo aids Google's development work on Android systems for cars. This collaboration will accelerate advancements in connected car technology globally.
Alwin Bakkenes, head of global software engineering at Volvo Cars, remarked on their commitment to delivering human-centric technology: "We strive to deliver human-centric technology, and a stunning customer experience is an essential part of this. Through this partnership with Google, we are able to bring the very latest features and capabilities from the leading consumer eco-system into our products first." The collaboration aims to shape future connected car solutions.
Google Gemini is set to replace the current Google Assistant in Volvo cars later this year. This change signifies a step forward in enhancing user interaction within vehicles through more intuitive communication methods.
