Volkswagen Virtus Completes Three Years In India - Over 61,000 Sold

Volkswagen India is celebrating three years since the Virtus sedan's launch in June 2022. Known for its safety, German build quality, and bold design, the Virtus has become a popular choice in the mid-size sedan segment. It holds a 5-star GNCAP rating and is often described as India's most awarded premium sedan.

Since its introduction, the Virtus has sold over 61,000 units in India over a 36-month period. Sales have shown steady growth: 18,914 units in the first year, 20,796 in the second, and 21,854 in the third year. Volkswagen claims a 32% share in the premium sedan segment for 2025 year-to-date.

The overall demand for sedans is declining as buyers increasingly prefer compact and mid-size SUVs. However, in the sedan segment, the Virtus lead the way, topping the sales charts in the calendar years 2024.

The Virtus is manufactured in India on Volkswagen's MQB-A0-IN platform and exported globally. The sedan features a turbo-petrol engine lineup and advanced safety features but faces pressure from market shifts toward SUVs.

Mr. Nitin Kohli, Brand Director of Volkswagen Passenger Cars India, commented on this milestone: “We are delighted that Virtus continues to lead the premium sedan segment, resonating deeply with aspirational customers who seek both style and substance. This milestone is a true testament to the trust our customers place in the Virtus and the Volkswagen brand. As the market evolves, we remain focused on innovation and delivering products that inspire confidence and pride.”

Volkswagen India reports that Virtus sales have grown by 7% year-on-year (YTD FY26 vs. YTD FY25). However, this growth comes from a modest base as market preferences shift towards SUVs. To maintain interest, Volkswagen plans to launch a facelifted version of the Virtus with more features and updates.

The company's focus is shifting towards SUVs and electric vehicles under its India 3.0 strategy. For sedans like Virtus to remain relevant, product updates, feature additions, and aggressive marketing will be crucial to sustain consumer interest as Volkswagen adapts to evolving market demands.
