Volkswagen Tiguan R-Line Vs Old Tiguan: New Platform, More Power, & Loaded With Tech
Volkswagen India has recently unveiled the latest iteration of its premiere SUV, the Tiguan R-Line, with an introduction price set at Rs 49 lakh, ex-showroom. This third-generation model brings to the table a host of updates both inside and out, along with enhanced power under the hood, thanks to its more potent TSI engine. This move places the Tiguan R-Line in direct competition with several luxury SUVs in the market, including the BMW X1, Audi Q3, and Mercedes GLA, marking a significant shift in Volkswagen’s positioning strategy.
Powertrain
The new Tiguan R-Line distinguishes itself with a turbo-petrol engine that maintains its 1,984cc displacement but ups its game to produce 204hp, which is an increment of 14hp over the previous model. The torque remains steady at 320Nm. This power is delivered to all four wheels through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, enabling the SUV to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in a brisk 7.1 seconds. This performance represents a notable improvement from the sub-8.5-second time of its predecessor, showcasing Volkswagen's dedication to enhancing driving dynamics.
Price Comparison
The Tiguan R-Line now commands a nearly 30 percent premium over the last model, translating to an increase of around Rs 11 lakh. The previous version was priced at Rs 38.17 lakh, ex-showroom. This price adjustment is attributed to the new model being a full import, as opposed to the earlier CKD (Completely Knocked Down) route. Set to rival luxury SUVs like the Nissan X-Trail and the upcoming new-generation Skoda Kodiaq, its pricing strategy is clear in setting the Tiguan R-Line as a premium offering.
Exterior Design
In terms of design, the Tiguan R-Line has undergone significant changes, making it longer and wider than its predecessor, yet marginally shorter in height. The underlying MQB Evo platform lends it a more sophisticated foundation than the MQB A2 platform of the old Tiguan. This new base supports not just the turbo-petrol variant but also holds potential for diesel, mild-hybrid, and plug-in hybrid models in other markets. The exterior sees a sportier makeover with sleek Matrix LED headlights, a closed glass nose with an LED strip, and sporty bumpers. The alloy wheels are now 19 inches, an inch larger than before, emphasizing its sporty appeal.
Interior & Tech
Moving inside, Volkswagen has completely overhauled the Tiguan R-Line's interior, introducing a more modern and luxurious environment. The dashboard now features a gloss black panel with pixel graphics, and the air conditioning controls have been integrated into a new, larger 15-inch touchscreen system. This system supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and controls for the new front massaging seats. Notably, the Tiguan R-Line now boasts a bigger 10.25-inch driver's display and a variety of advanced features such as a drive mode selector, shift-by-wire gear selector, and VW's Dynamic Chassis Control Pro.
Safety Enhancements
Safety is also a significant focus, with the Tiguan R-Line featuring nine airbags, up from six in the previous model. It also incorporates Level 2 ADAS (Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), enhancing its safety credentials further with a 5-star Euro NCAP crash-safety rating. Additional features like Park Assist Plus demonstrate Volkswagen's commitment to not just comfort and luxury but also safety and convenience.
Colours
Volkswagen offers the Tiguan R-Line in six striking monotone colours, ensuring there's a hue to match every buyer's taste. From Persimmon Red to Oryx White, the colour palette is as diverse as it is appealing, complementing the SUV's updated aesthetic perfectly.
