Volkswagen Unveils Unique Harlequin Livery To Celebrate 50 Years Of The Polo Model
Volkswagen has introduced a unique Harlequin-themed livery to commemorate the Polo's 50th anniversary. This vibrant design, selected by fans on social media, was unveiled at Bicester Motion's springtime Scramble event. It will feature on championship-winning Polo rally cars during celebratory activities later this year.
The striking livery was showcased on a Polo R World Rallycross show car, replicating Johan Kristoffersson’s successful FIA WRX car. Fans participated in a global online poll to choose from four liveries inspired by the 1990s Polo Harlequin special edition. The winning design incorporates a 1980s pop-art pattern and original Harlequin colours: Chagallblau, Flashrot, Ginstergelb, and Pistazie.
Volkswagen continues to be a dominant force in the automotive industry. In 2024, they registered 166,304 new passenger vehicles in the UK, securing an 8.52% market share. This achievement marked Volkswagen as the UK's top-selling new-car brand for the fourth consecutive year.
The brand operates globally, producing vehicles at 29 locations across 12 countries and employing 170,000 people. In 2024 alone, Volkswagen delivered approximately 4.80 million vehicles worldwide. Their lineup includes popular models like the Polo, T-Roc, T-Cross, Golf, Tiguan, Passat, and the all-electric ID. series.
At Bicester's event, four other Polo models were displayed alongside the Harlequin-themed car. These included an original Polo GLS Mk1 from 1975 in Inari silver and a Cherry red Polo Mk2. The current generation Polo Black Edition and sporty Polo GTI highlighted the model's evolution over five decades and its global sales of over 20 million units.
Mike Orford, Head of PR and Communications at Volkswagen UK, expressed enthusiasm about the celebrations: "The Polo is a model that resonates with so many people for different reasons." He noted its significance in various aspects of people's lives and emphasized how special it is for Volkswagen to celebrate such milestones in vibrant ways.
"We’re really looking forward to seeing this one-off livery in action later in the year as the birthday celebrations really ramp up," Orford added.
Sustainable Mobility Ambitions
Volkswagen is committed to sustainable mobility through its ACCELERATE strategy. In 2024, they delivered around 383,000 all-electric vehicles globally. This initiative aims to position Volkswagen as the most desirable brand for sustainable transportation solutions.
The Harlequin-themed livery not only celebrates past achievements but also highlights Volkswagen's ongoing commitment to innovation and sustainability within the automotive industry.
