Volkswagen And NBCUniversal Collaborate To Revive Iconic SNL Sketch 'The Californians' Featuring ID. Buzz
Volkswagen of America, Inc. has partnered with NBCUniversal to celebrate the 50th anniversary of "Saturday Night Live" (SNL). The collaboration features a co-branded spot that showcases the ID. Buzz in a reimagined version of "The Californians," a well-known SNL sketch. Original cast members Fred Armisen, Bill Hader, and Kristen Wiig reprise their roles in this special segment.
The ID. Buzz, Volkswagen's all-electric take on the classic Microbus, plays a central role in the sketch. This integration highlights Volkswagen's connection to California, a state deeply rooted in car culture. The parody also includes references to driving routes across Southern California.
In addition to its entertainment efforts, Volkswagen is committed to supporting communities in California. The company has pledged financial support to the California Fire Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to aiding first responders and their families throughout the state.
Brian K. Rice, Chair of the California Fire Foundation, expressed gratitude for Volkswagen's contribution. He stated, "With the leadership and oversight of professional firefighters, the California Fire Foundation provides immediate relief to evacuees and firefighters whose lives are risked and upended in times of disaster, resources to prepare firefighters and communities to prevent and combat firestorms that devastate our state, and emotional and financial assistance to families of fallen firefighters, firefighters and the communities we protect."
The special spot featuring "The Californians" will air during "SNL50: The Homecoming Concert" on Friday, February 14. It will be broadcast live on Peacock at 8 p.m. ET / 5 p.m. PT and will be available on various digital platforms as part of an extensive branded content campaign.
Rachael Zaluzec, Senior Vice President of Customer Experience and Brand Marketing at Volkswagen of America, commented on this collaboration by saying that both Volkswagen’s recent 75th anniversary in the U.S. and SNL’s 50th season are significant milestones for these iconic brands.
