The Volkswagen Polo Is Back - But It's An EV

Volkswagen has announced that the Polo nameplate will return, this time in an electric format. The ID.2all concept will enter production as the ID.Polo, and a GTI variant will also be introduced as the first-ever electric GTI in VW's lineup.

The global reveal of the ID.Polo and ID.Polo GTI is scheduled at the IAA Mobility show in Munich later this month. Both models will reach European markets in 2026. They will be underpinned by the MEB Entry electric platform and offered with two battery pack options.

The ID.Polo measures 4,053 mm in length, 1,816 mm in width and 1,530 mm in height. A front-mounted motor will drive the hatchback, while the GTI variant is expected to deliver around 223 horsepower. Charging options are also expected to include super-fast DC capability.

Volkswagen says the move to revive familiar badges reflects a shift in its EV naming strategy. Legacy names like Polo, Golf and Passat will gradually replace alphanumeric IDs to improve recognition and maintain brand equity as the company expands its electric line-up.

In India, the Polo was discontinued in 2022 after a 12-year run. Sales had declined to 11,816 units in the 2021-22 period. The model's exit left Volkswagen's India portfolio focused on SUVs such as the Taigun, Tiguan and Virtus sedan under its India 2.0 strategy.

Volkswagen has previously acknowledged the strong demand among enthusiasts for the Polo nameplate in India. However, the hatchback, even in this updated EV guise is not part of current product plans thanks to regulatory constraints and the narrow margins in the sub-four-metre segment.

The Polo has a paricularly potentlegacy in India among enthusiasts, having built a reputation for driving dynamics and build quality. Its return as an EV is viewed as a symbolic move globally, but the VW's India's priorities remain centred on SUVs.

While a Polo EV or derivative could be considered in future, Volkswagen has not committed to any India launch. For now, the Polo revival in electric form is limited to global markets, marking the 50th anniversary of the nameplate that first went into production in 1975.
