Volkswagen Golf GTI Mk 8.5 Launched In India At Rs 53 Lakh
Volkswagen has officially launched the Golf GTI Mk 8.5 in India, marking it as the priciest model available from the brand in the country, with an ex-showroom price of Rs 53 lakh. This launch follows the discontinuation of the Polo GTI, making the Golf GTI the second GTI model introduced by VW India. The vehicle arrives on Indian shores as a Completely Built Unit (CBU), with an initial batch of 150 units already spoken for.
Powertrain & Performance
Underneath its hood, the Volkswagen Golf GTI boasts a robust 2.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbo-petrol engine that delivers a powerful 265hp and 370Nm of torque, similar to what is found in the newly released Volkswagen Tiguan R Line SUV. This engine pairs seamlessly with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission that drives power directly to the front wheels. Additionally, the vehicle features an electronically controlled front-axle differential lock, enhancing its performance capabilities.

When it comes to speed, the Golf GTI does not disappoint, with the capability to accelerate from 0 to 100kph in a mere 5.9 seconds. Its top speed caps at an electronically limited 250kph, setting a high bar when compared to competitors like the Mini Cooper S, which takes 6.6 seconds to reach 100kph and has a top speed of 242kph.
Design & Colour Options
The exterior design of the Golf GTI is as striking as its performance. It features an illuminated VW badge at the front and Matrix LED headlights connected by a slim DRL strip. The sporty aesthetic is further accentuated by X-shaped LED fog lights and a sleek red stripe running along the nose, complemented by GTI badges on the grille, front doors, and tailgate. Riding on 18-inch dual-tone alloy wheels and equipped with red brake calipers, the Golf GTI also boasts smoked-out LED tail-lights, a notable roof spoiler, and dual exhaust tips.
Buyers in India can choose from four distinct exterior shades: Grenadilla Black, Kings Red, Moonstone Grey, and Oryx White. These options offer a range of choices to cater to individual preferences, enhancing the vehicle's appeal.
Interior Features
Inside, the Golf GTI continues to impress with sports seats adorned with 'GTI’ stitching in red on the fixed front headrests and signature tartan inserts. The leather-wrapped steering wheel with a red GTI clasp adds to the vehicle's sporty interior ambiance. The Golf Mk 8.5 is also equipped with a 12.9-inch touchscreen and a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster, along with a sunroof, wireless charger, three-zone climate control, paddle shifters, 30-colour ambient lighting, and heated front seats for a luxurious driving experience.
Safety
Safety is a priority in the Golf GTI, which is outfitted with seven airbags, a rear-view camera, a tyre pressure monitoring system, ISOFIX anchors for child safety, and Level 2 Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). These ADAS features include auto emergency braking, lane-change assist, and rear traffic alert, ensuring a secure and comfortable ride.
DriveSpark Thinks
The introduction of the VW Golf GTI Mk 8.5 in India brings a blend of speed, style, and sophistication to the market. With its performance-focused powertrain, sporty design elements, and advanced safety features, the Golf GTI sets a new standard for Volkswagen’s offerings in the country. As it takes the mantle from the discontinued Polo GTI, this model stands as a testament to Volkswagen's commitment to delivering high-quality, performance-oriented vehicles to the Indian market.
