Volkswagen Golf Wins Best Fleet Medium Car Award At Great British Fleet Awards 2024
The Volkswagen Golf has been recognised as the Best Fleet Medium Car at the Great British Fleet Awards. This accolade was announced during a dinner following the Great British Fleet Event in Milton Keynes. The event highlighted new launches and developments in fleet management. The awards, judged by experts from Fleet World, celebrate excellence in fleet management and products that promote safe, sustainable, and cost-effective fleet operations.
Volkswagen's Golf continues to impress after more than 50 years in the automotive industry. John Challen, Fleet World Editor, remarked on its enduring appeal: "Celebrating more than 50 years in the automotive world, Volkswagen’s Golf continues to go from strength to strength. It is economical, offers a vast range of powertrains across all body styles and is a pleasant place to be. The phrase ‘if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it’ comes to mind, because the Golf continues to do everything so well."
The plug-in hybrid versions of the Golf are particularly popular among fleet managers. Owen Shepherd, Head of Direct Sales at Volkswagen UK, noted their appeal: "The plug-in hybrid Match, Style and GTE versions in particular are immensely popular fleet cars. They combine assured driving characteristics with up to 88 miles of WLTP-combined electric-only range and fast 40 kW DC charging. Throw in CO2 emissions as low as six grammes per kilometre and current benefit-in-kind tax rates of just six per cent – not to mention generous space for people and baggage – and it’s clear these cars are true thoroughbreds."
Volkswagen's Polo also received recognition recently as the Intelligent Instructor Car of the Year for 2025. This award is part of the Intelligent Instructor Awards which highlight excellence in driver training. Over 8,000 driving instructors across the UK voted for this accolade.
The Polo was praised for its suitability for both learners and instructors. Intelligent Instructor described it as "the perfect partner for driving tuition and beyond" due to its adaptability and ease of use in city environments. Its compact size aids manoeuvrability while offering comfort and quality inside.
Both the Golf and Polo were among the top-10 best-selling cars in the UK in 2024 despite not being SUVs. This highlights their ongoing popularity and value among consumers.
Volkswagen's Market Leadership
In 2024, Volkswagen maintained its position as the UK's best-selling new-car brand for four consecutive years. A total of 166,304 new Volkswagen passenger vehicles were registered that year according to data from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT). This figure represented an 8.52% market share.
Globally, Volkswagen delivered approximately 4.80 million vehicles in 2024 including popular models like Polo, T-Roc, T-Cross, Golf, Tiguan, Passat along with successful all-electric ID models.
The company handed over around 383,000 all-electric vehicles worldwide last year under its ACCELERATE strategy aimed at becoming a leading brand for sustainable mobility.
