Volkswagen Of America Celebrates International Bus Day With Restoration Of T2 Bus From California Wildfires

Volkswagen of America is marking the third International Volkswagen Bus Day by announcing a special restoration project. The focus is on a 1977 T2 bus, known as "Azul," which survived the January 2025 Palisades Fire in Southern California. This day, recognised by the National Day Calendar, celebrates VW buses from the T1 to the ID. Buzz every June 2nd.

The T2 gained fame after an AP photograph showed it untouched amidst a fire-ravaged Malibu neighbourhood. Mark Gillies, Director of Public Relations and Reputation for Volkswagen Group of America, expressed disbelief at its condition, stating, "Like the rest of the world, we couldn’t believe our eyes." Despite its appearance, they knew it needed thorough inspection.

Volkswagen reached out to Megan Krystle Weinraub, Azul's owner, offering to assess and restore the bus if necessary. Weinraub was relieved by this offer as she felt overwhelmed with how to proceed with Azul's newfound symbolic status. The vehicle was transported to Volkswagen’s Oxnard Campus for evaluation.

The Oxnard facility is home to Volkswagen of America's collection of historic vehicles. It was deemed perfect for Azul's restoration. Upon examination, it was clear that although one side looked good, extensive mechanical repairs and bodywork were needed for full functionality.

Volkswagen has pledged support to California communities affected by recent fires through donations to the California Fire Foundation. Rachael Zaluzec, SVP of Marketing & Customer Experience for Volkswagen Group of America, highlighted California's connection with VW buses: "California will always be synonymous with the VW Bus."

Zaluzec added that restoring Azul would allow its message of hope to continue and strengthen their cultural ties with California. The restoration work is underway and expected to finish later this year.

Celebrating Iconic Vehicles

International Volkswagen Bus Day celebrates both classic VW buses and modern models like the ID. Buzz. This event aims to bring joy across generations by honouring these iconic vehicles each June 2nd.

Volkswagen plans to share more details about Azul’s restoration on media.vw.com and their social media channels soon. This initiative reflects their commitment to preserving automotive history while supporting local communities.

Volkswagen of America operates under Volkswagen Group of America, a subsidiary of Volkswagen AG based in Reston, Virginia. They sell various models through over 600 U.S. dealers and have an assembly plant in Chattanooga, Tennessee.

The global Volkswagen Group ranks among the largest car producers worldwide and leads as Europe's biggest automaker. For further information about their operations or vehicles like Atlas or ID.4 visit www.vw.com or media.vw.com.
