Utrecht Launches Europe's First Large-Scale Vehicle-to-Grid Car-Sharing Service For Sustainable Mobility

A groundbreaking collaboration has emerged in Utrecht, involving Renault Group, We Drive Solar, MyWheels, and the Municipality of Utrecht. This partnership introduces a pioneering Vehicle-to-Grid (V2G) car-sharing service called "Utrecht Energized." The initiative aims to stabilise the local grid while offering residents an affordable and sustainable mobility solution. It marks the first fully operational V2G ecosystem in a European city.

Renault Group has supplied 500 electric vehicles equipped with Mobilize V2G technology. Currently, 50 Renault 5 E-Tech electric cars are available, with plans to expand the fleet to include other models like the Renault 4 E-Tech electric, Renault Megane E-Tech electric, and Renault Scenic E-Tech electric. This initiative supports a more efficient energy system in a city where 35% of rooftops already have solar panels.

The Netherlands is at the forefront of renewable energy deployment, particularly solar and wind power. However, this presents challenges for the grid due to high peaks in energy supply. V2G technology addresses these issues by allowing electric vehicles to store energy and feed it back to the grid during peak periods. This ensures renewable power is available around the clock.

The launch of this large-scale car-sharing service was announced in November 2024 and is now live. It represents a significant step towards cleaner mobility by promoting the availability of electric shared cars while balancing the city's electricity network through bidirectional charging technology.

Renault Group's collaboration with We Drive Solar, MyWheels, and the Municipality of Utrecht demonstrates how public-private initiatives can deliver sustainable mobility solutions. By combining mobility and energy solutions, MyWheels sets a new benchmark for car-sharing and tackles key urban challenges.

We Drive Solar provides advanced charging solutions with bidirectional public AC chargers that support Mobilize's V2G toolkit. The 500 Renault E-Tech electric models operated by MyWheels contribute significantly to balancing solar- and wind-generated electricity at peak times in Utrecht.

Regulatory Support Needed for Widespread Adoption

To fully unlock V2G's potential, Renault Group calls for supportive regulatory frameworks across Europe. These should address barriers such as unfavourable tax policies, grid fee structures, and complex certification processes. Clear regulations are crucial for making V2G a cornerstone of a faster energy transition.

"To unlock the full potential of V2G, we need to break down existing barriers – from adapting fiscal rules and grid fees to promoting interoperability and simplifying certification processes," said Jérôme Faton, Mobilize Energy director.

Commitment to Sustainable Innovation

Renault Group is committed to reinventing mobility through electrification and innovative technologies. With operations in over 130 countries and selling over two million vehicles worldwide in 2023, they aim for carbon neutrality in Europe by 2040. Their focus on developing new technologies aligns with their ambitious transformation goals.

This initiative highlights how collaborative efforts can turn promising concepts into tangible realities. By joining forces with various stakeholders, Renault Group is transforming V2G from concept to reality while urging policymakers to accelerate its deployment across Europe.
