Ultimate Racing Machine Exhibit Celebrates 50 Years Of BMW 3 Series In Motorsports At Petersen Museum
The Petersen Automotive Museum and BMW of North America have unveiled an exhibit titled "The Ultimate Racing Machine. 50 Years of the BMW 3 Series in Motorsports." This display, located in the Phil Hill Legends Room, highlights the evolution of BMW's motorsport legacy through its iconic 3 Series. Terry L. Karges, Executive Director of the museum, remarked on the exhibit's significance in showcasing BMW's competitive spirit over five decades.
Thomas Plucinsky, Head of BMW Group Classic USA, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration with the museum to celebrate this milestone. He noted that both the original and current 3 Series models, along with their counterparts in the 4 Series, are central to BMW's identity. The exhibit features seven significant race cars from each generation of the 3 Series.
The exhibit traces the journey of the BMW 3 Series across seven generations, illustrating its impact on racing and brand heritage. Alongside race cars, three well-preserved street versions are displayed, including a rare V8-powered M3 GTR Straßenversion. This collection offers a comprehensive view of how these vehicles have shaped motorsport history.
The first generation (E21) began with the 1978 BMW 320i Group 5. In late 1976, BMW aimed to compete in the Under 2-Liter Class for Makes World Championship. By March 1977, they transformed the E21 into a lightweight race car featuring titanium coil springs and magnesium uprights.
The second generation (E30) introduced the 1990 BMW M3 Group A DTM. Launched in 1982 and homologated as 'M3' in March 1987 for Group A racing rules, it required producing 2,500 street versions within a year. Team Bigazzi campaigned this model in DTM championships with British driver Steve Soper.
The third generation (E36) saw the emergence of the 1996 BMW M3 GT-2. Based on a high-performance coupe, it featured a race-tuned engine and reduced weight for better power-to-weight ratio. Team PTG prepared this model which won consecutive Drivers’ and Manufacturers’ Championships in SportsCar GT-2 category.
Technological Advancements
The fourth generation (E46) brought forth innovations like the V8 engine in the 2001 BMW M3 GTR. This model was notable for its unique powerplant designed by BMW Motorsport specifically for racing purposes. It became legendary after winning at Petit Le Mans finale with a special "Stars and Stripes" livery.
The fifth generation (E92) introduced advanced technology with its M3 GT model developed for American Le Mans Series rules. It achieved remarkable success by sweeping ALMS championships including Driver and Manufacturer titles during its campaign years.
Modern Developments
The sixth generation (F82) showcased technological advancements through its M4 DTM Class 1 car raced by Timo Glock during the final season before adopting FIA GT3 type cars in DTM series from 2021 onwards.
The seventh generation (G82) features cutting-edge technology embodied by its M4 GT4 model used extensively for driver training at BMW Performance Center West located in Thermal California.
This exhibition will be open until June 2026 at Petersen Automotive Museum situated on Wilshire Blvd., Los Angeles CA offering visitors an opportunity to explore these remarkable machines firsthand.
