Keeping a tyre pressure gauge in your car is an affordable way to ensure tyres are properly inflated. This is especially crucial for electric vehicles (EVs), which are twice as likely to experience flat tyres compared to petrol and diesel cars.
Properly inflated tyres enhance handling, steering, braking, and fuel efficiency. Lee Puffett, Managing Director of Start Rescue, states that maintaining correct tyre pressure also reduces wear and tear, preventing punctures or damage that could lead to breakdowns. Quick and easy checks can help avoid these issues.
Flat tyres account for 14% of breakdowns in petrol and diesel vehicles, but this figure rises to 28.6% for EVs. With many planning trips during the Bank Holiday weekend, investing in a combined tyre pressure and tread depth gauge for under £10 is wise.
James Luckhurst from the Guild of Experienced Motorists emphasises the importance of using simple tools to check tyre pressures and depth. "It only takes a couple of minutes," he says, "but it can save hours if your car has a blowout due to under- or over-inflated tyres." Ensuring proper tyre maintenance reduces roadside risks during breakdowns.
The correct pressure ratings for your vehicle's tyres are usually found on a sticker inside the driver’s door or in the owner’s manual. Lee Puffett suggests making a note of these pressures for convenience when checking them regularly.

Puffett advises adjusting tyre pressures when carrying passengers or luggage to ensure safety during trips. This simple step can contribute to a trouble-free journey over the Bank Holiday period.
