Toyota Tacoma Makes History As First Midsize Pickup To Win Truck Of Texas Award
The Toyota Tacoma has made history by becoming the first midsize pickup truck to win the prestigious Truck of Texas award at the Texas Auto Writers Association's (TAWA) 31st annual Texas Truck Rodeo. This achievement marks the third time in four years that a Toyota pickup has claimed this top honour, with the Tundra winning in 2022 and 2024.
TAWA also recognised other vehicles at the event, awarding the all-new Lexus GX 550 as SUV of Texas. The Tacoma was named Midsize Truck of Texas, while the GX 550 earned Midsize SUV of Texas. Toyota's Wireless Trailer Camera won Best Towing Technology, and Safety Sense 3.0 received Best Driver Assist or Safety Feature.

The latest generation Tacoma, introduced in spring 2023, features two new powertrains. Among them is the i-FORCE MAX hybrid powertrain, delivering up to 326 horsepower and an impressive 465 lb.-ft. of torque. This represents a significant increase in torque compared to its predecessor's V-6 engine.
Designed by Calty Design Research in California and engineered by TMNA R&D in Ann Arbor, the Tacoma is assembled for North America. It offers 11 unique grades tailored to various lifestyles and customer needs. The Trailhunter grade enhances Toyota’s off-road reputation with robust engineering and components.
TAWA President Cory Fourniquet stated, "The Truck of Texas award is prestigious and competitive, and the Tacoma has truly earned the title." He noted that members were impressed by its diverse grades and new powertrains. TAWA is a nonprofit association promoting professionalism among automotive journalists for over two decades.
The annual Texas Truck Rodeo allows journalists to evaluate trucks and SUVs on both off-road courses and street drives. Held at Eagles Canyon Raceway in Decatur, Texas, vehicles are assessed based on interior, exterior, value, performance, and personal appeal.
